Long-term image storage and phase conjugation by a backward-stimulated echo in Pr^3+:LaF_3

Abstract

We have observed spatial-image storage and phase conjugation, using a backward-stimulated echo in a solid sample. The image storage and the delayed phase conjugation were observed to last for at least 15 sec, which is 3 × 105 times longer than the radiative lifetime of the excited state. The backward-stimulated echo produced on the 3H4–3P0 transition of Pr3+:LaF3 is found to be a phase-conjugated spatial reproduction of the first excitation pulse. The image storage time depends strongly on the sample temperature.

Storage and phase conjugation of multiple images using backward-stimulated echoes in Pr^3+:LaF_3

M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

We have observed long-term storage and phase conjugation of multiple images by using a backward-stimulated echo scheme in the 3H4 -3Po transition of Pr3+:LaF3 crystal. The temporal order of the multiple-echo images is the reverse of that of the input images. Each of the echo images is a phase-conjugate replica of the input images and lasts as long as IS sec. This constitutes, in principle, the movie using a stimulated photon echo.

Long-term storage and phase conjugation of time-resolved multiple images

M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

We have observed long-term storage and phase conjugation of multiple images using a backward stimulated echo scheme in the 3H4—3P0 transition of Pr3+:LaF3 crystal. The input spatial images are separated by 20-ns time intervals. The temporal order of the multiple-echo images is the reverse of the input images. Each echo image is a phase-conjugate replica of the corresponding input image. The storage lasts up to 15 s. This constitutes, in principle, the first demonstration of an ultrafast holographic movie using stimulated photon echo.

Multiple-Bit Long-Term Data Storage by Backward Stimulated Echo in eu3+:yalo3

M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

The backward stimulated echo has been considered as a novel high-speed high-density optical data storage method. But its potential application has been confined to transient dynamic memory because of relatively short lifetime of optical coherence inside low-temperature solids. Here we report the longest observed storage time of at least six hours in the 581.8 nm7F0-5D0 transition of eu 3+ -doped YAlO3 crystal at 2°K. The experiments are performed using YAG-pumped pulsed dye lasers, beamsplitters and optical delay lines to produce five DATA pulses, at 20 nsec intervals, and WRITE and READ pulses. The measured echo intensity as a function of storage time has exponential decay time of 3.8 hours. This very long storage time is due to the very small effective nuclear magnetic moments of Eu3+ ions, and is consistent with the long lifetime of spectral hole in this system. We also observed that the signal fidelity is not noticeably affected by the number of DATA pulses and the long storage time.

Spectroscopy, relaxation, and laser action in Pr3+:LaF3

R. Kichinski, Fred Moshary, Sven R. Hartmann

The photon echo technique was used to investigate the 3P0‐3H6 (5985Å) and the two 3P0‐3H5 (5333.0 Å 5333.5 Å) transitions in Pr3+:LaF3 at 4.6 K. On the 3P0‐3H6 transition, the data displayed modulation and spanned a dynamic range of nine decades in intensity. Echo relaxation rates were anomalously fast in view of previous experiments in this sample. We also report observation of ‘Satellite Echoes’ on the satellite lines of the 3P0‐3H4(4778 Å) transition and present photon echo data obtained on one of the satellite lines. Lasing was observed at 4.6 K and at 77 K during pulse excitation of the 3P0‐3H4 and 3P1(2I6)‐3H4(4633 Å) transitions.

Storage and phase conjugation of light pulses using stimulated photon echoes

N. W. Carlson, William Randall Babbitt, THOMAS W. MOSSBERG

We experimentally demonstrate that three-excitation-pulse (i.e., stimulated) photon echo signals can be backward-propagating, phase-conjugate replicas of the second echo-excitation pulse. Working on the 555.6-nm absorption line of atomic Yb vapor, echo signals, effectively 0.5% as intense as the second excitation pulse, are shown to reproduce image information carried by the second excitation pulse even when wave-front distorters are employed.

Phonon-Induced Transverse Relaxation in LaF3:Pr3+ Measured by Photon Echoes

T. Kohmoto, Hiroki Nakatsuka, Masahiro Matsuoka

Temperature dependences of backward photon echo intensity have been measured from 5°K to 13°K on the 3P0–3H4 (4778 Å) and 1D2–3H4 (5925 Å) transitions of LaF3:Pr3+. Over six orders of magnitude (on the 3P0–3H4 transition) and three orders of magnitude (on the 1D2–3H4 transition) of the photon echo intensity, the experimental results are explained by the one-phonon process (the direct process) taking into account the energy differences between the echo levels and their adjacent levels. Preliminary measurements have also been made on the 4G7/2–4I9/2 (5221 Å) and 4G5/2–4I9/2 (5775 Å) transitions of LaF3:Nd3+.
