Storage and phase conjugation of light pulses using stimulated photon echoes

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate that three-excitation-pulse (i.e., stimulated) photon echo signals can be backward-propagating, phase-conjugate replicas of the second echo-excitation pulse. Working on the 555.6-nm absorption line of atomic Yb vapor, echo signals, effectively 0.5% as intense as the second excitation pulse, are shown to reproduce image information carried by the second excitation pulse even when wave-front distorters are employed.

Storage and time reversal of light pulses using photon echoes

N. W. Carlson, William Randall Babbitt, THOMAS W. MOSSBERG +2 more

We have studied the temporal profile of photon-echo signals generated by combined gated cw and pulsed dye-laser excitation of the inhomogeneously broadened, 555.6-nm absorption line of (174)Yb vapor. We find that the echo profile is, after time reversal, essentially identical with that of the first excitation pulse. We give a new analysis of this effect. Since time-reversed pulse reproduction should also occur in inhomogeneously broadened solid samples, and since we observe time-reversed reproduced pulses up to 4% as intense as the input pulse, this effect may have important applications in optical signal-processing systems.

Storage and phase conjugation of multiple images using backward-stimulated echoes in Pr^3+:LaF_3

M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

We have observed long-term storage and phase conjugation of multiple images by using a backward-stimulated echo scheme in the 3H4 -3Po transition of Pr3+:LaF3 crystal. The temporal order of the multiple-echo images is the reverse of that of the input images. Each of the echo images is a phase-conjugate replica of the input images and lasts as long as IS sec. This constitutes, in principle, the movie using a stimulated photon echo.

Standing-Wave—Induced Backward Photon Echoes in Gases

N. W. Carlson, Arjun G. Yodh, THOMAS W. MOSSBERG

It has been found that a standing-wave pulse may be employed to produce an easily detectable, backward-propagating, phase-conjugate "replica" of any traditional gas-phase photon-echo signal. Standing-wave---induced backward two-pulse photon echoes have been observed in lithium vapor while only apertures were used to block laser background. An interesting dependence of backward echo intensity on standing-wave orientation is observed and discussed.

Long-term storage and phase conjugation of time-resolved multiple images

M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

We have observed long-term storage and phase conjugation of multiple images using a backward stimulated echo scheme in the 3H4—3P0 transition of Pr3+:LaF3 crystal. The input spatial images are separated by 20-ns time intervals. The temporal order of the multiple-echo images is the reverse of the input images. Each echo image is a phase-conjugate replica of the corresponding input image. The storage lasts up to 15 s. This constitutes, in principle, the first demonstration of an ultrafast holographic movie using stimulated photon echo.

Long-term image storage and phase conjugation by a backward-stimulated echo in Pr^3+:LaF_3

M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

We have observed spatial-image storage and phase conjugation, using a backward-stimulated echo in a solid sample. The image storage and the delayed phase conjugation were observed to last for at least 15 sec, which is 3 × 105 times longer than the radiative lifetime of the excited state. The backward-stimulated echo produced on the 3H4–3P0 transition of Pr3+:LaF3 is found to be a phase-conjugated spatial reproduction of the first excitation pulse. The image storage time depends strongly on the sample temperature.

Field-inhibited optical dephasing and shape locking of photon echoes

N. W. Carlson, William Randall Babbitt, Yu Bai +1 more

Using an acousto-optically gated cw dye laser and working on the 555.6-nm absorption line of atomic(174)Yb, we have studied the shape of two-excitation-pulse photon echoes as a function of the duration and intensity of the second excitation pulse. Surprisingly, a long and intense second excitation pulse is found to generate an echo having a shape highly correlated with that of the first excitation pulse. This occurs because the high field of pulse 2 effectively stops dephasing processes throughout its duration.
