Storage and phase conjugation of multiple images using backward-stimulated echoes in Pr^3+:LaF_3

Abstract

We have observed long-term storage and phase conjugation of multiple images by using a backward-stimulated echo scheme in the 3H4 -3Po transition of Pr3+:LaF3 crystal. The temporal order of the multiple-echo images is the reverse of that of the input images. Each of the echo images is a phase-conjugate replica of the input images and lasts as long as IS sec. This constitutes, in principle, the movie using a stimulated photon echo.

Long-term storage and phase conjugation of time-resolved multiple images

M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

We have observed long-term storage and phase conjugation of multiple images using a backward stimulated echo scheme in the 3H4—3P0 transition of Pr3+:LaF3 crystal. The input spatial images are separated by 20-ns time intervals. The temporal order of the multiple-echo images is the reverse of the input images. Each echo image is a phase-conjugate replica of the corresponding input image. The storage lasts up to 15 s. This constitutes, in principle, the first demonstration of an ultrafast holographic movie using stimulated photon echo.

Long-term image storage and phase conjugation by a backward-stimulated echo in Pr^3+:LaF_3

M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

We have observed spatial-image storage and phase conjugation, using a backward-stimulated echo in a solid sample. The image storage and the delayed phase conjugation were observed to last for at least 15 sec, which is 3 × 105 times longer than the radiative lifetime of the excited state. The backward-stimulated echo produced on the 3H4–3P0 transition of Pr3+:LaF3 is found to be a phase-conjugated spatial reproduction of the first excitation pulse. The image storage time depends strongly on the sample temperature.

Storage and phase conjugation of light pulses using stimulated photon echoes

N. W. Carlson, William Randall Babbitt, THOMAS W. MOSSBERG

We experimentally demonstrate that three-excitation-pulse (i.e., stimulated) photon echo signals can be backward-propagating, phase-conjugate replicas of the second echo-excitation pulse. Working on the 555.6-nm absorption line of atomic Yb vapor, echo signals, effectively 0.5% as intense as the second excitation pulse, are shown to reproduce image information carried by the second excitation pulse even when wave-front distorters are employed.

Multiple-bit long-term data storage by backward-stimulated echo in Eu^3+:YAlO_3

M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

We have observed faithful storage and retrieval of multiple data pulses for up to 5 h in Eu(3+):YAlO(3) crystal by using the backward-stimulated echo. We find no loss of echo fidelity as the storage time is increased. Furthermore the lack of cross talk between the input data pulses suggests that faithful long-term storage and retrieval of a large number of data pulses are possible. Our measured echo-storage lifetime of 3.8 h is to our knowledge the longest reported thus far.

Spatial binary multiplication by photon echoes

D. Manganaris, M. K. Kim

The phase conjugation property of backward-stimulated photon echo (BSE) has numerous potential applications in optical data storage and processing. We demonstrate mixed binary multiplication of spatially encoded bit patterns, by taking advantage of the fact that the geometry of BSE is analogous to that of conventional holography or four-wave mixing of nonlinear optics, where an object (data) and a reference (write) beams interfere to create a grating inside the medium, and another reference (read) beam is diffracted from that grating. When all three input beams contain structures, the output pattern is the convolution and correlation of the input patterns, which, with certain arrangements and interpretation, can be used for multiplication of binary numbers. The experiments were done by using a 477.8 nm transition of praseodymium ion-doped in single-crystal lanthanum trifluoride.
