Transient stimulated Brillouin scattering in a fiber ring resonator and its effect on optical Kerr bistability

Abstract

We numerically investigate the transient interaction between optical Kerr bistability and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) when an intense optical pulse is incident in a short fiber ring resonator. An initial phase detuning of the ring resonator and the difference in the phase shift between the pump wave and the created Stokes wave are taken into account in the three-wave SBS model. The ratio of the Brillouin gain coefficient to the nonlinear refractive index of the fiber, which is termed the relative Brillouin gain coefficient, is used as a key parameter for examining the conditions for obtaining optical Kerr bistability in a fiber ring resonator. The numerical results show that optical Kerr bistability cannot be obtained in a ring resonator made from a conventional fused-silica fiber because of the generation of SBS. However, if other fibers with relative Brillouin gain coefficients at least 1 order smaller than that of fused-silica fibers are used, we can suppress SBS and hence obtain optical Kerr bistability. Moreover, we investigate theoretically and experimentally the dynamics of SBS in a fused-silica fiber ring resonator irradiated by a Gaussian pulse. The relaxation and pulsation in the Stokes signal depend strongly on the initial phase detuning of the ring resonator. The experimental results obtained with a single-frequency pulsed YAG laser agree qualitatively with theoretical predictions.

Generation of Optical Bistability in a Fiber Fabry–Perot Resonator Using Mode-locked Picosecond Pulses

Kazuhiko Ogusu, 高顕 古野間, Jun Yamasaki +2 more

We demonstrate the generation of optical bistability in a Fabry–Perot resonator made of a fused-silica single-mode polarization-maintaining fiber. To suppress the undesirable generation of stimulated Brillouin scattering, a pulse train from a mode-locked and Q-switched picosecond laser was used as an incident pulse and the fiber resonator was synchronized with it. We observed first-order bistability, higher order bistability, and power limiting depending on the initial cavity detuning and mirror reflectivity. The obtained results could be well explained by our previous transient analysis based on an iterative method.

Superluminal signal conversion in stimulated Brillouin scattering via an optical fiber ring resonator

Liang Zhang, Li Zhan, Jinmei Liu +4 more

We report the superluminal phenomenon of both Stokes and pump light in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) via an optical-fiber ring lasing resonator. In our experiment, the superluminal generation of Stokes light firstly delayed with 33.79 ns and then propagated with the advancement of 93.34 ns within an 8-m single mode fiber (SMF), when the pump power increased from the SBS threshold to a higher power. This proves the first evidence that the optical interaction is determined by the group velocity even at the negative group velocity superluminal propagation. It is important that, this implies the possibility of superluminal information interchange because the results also indicate that the signal conversion between different wavelengths can be realized at the negative group velocity propagation.

Kerr Effect in Brillouin Fiber-optic Ringesonator

Wang Jun

Based on the mechanism of Kerr effect in Brillouin Fiber-optic Ring Resonator(BFRR),the resonant cavity characteristic is researched theoretically when considering the Kerr effect,in order to get the possibility of occurrence of first-order Stokes light optical bistability. Experiments show that the optical bistability in 30 meters short cavity happens while input light intensity is about 440 μW,and the bistability is related with coupling coefficient and the insertion loss of the cavity coupler. Secondly, the Kerr effect in BFRR of Brillouin Fiber-optic Gyroscope (BFOG) is analyzed, focusing on the influence of resonant deviation on gyroscope nonlinear output and dynamic working range. Furthermore, the double-loop BFOG program is proposed, which provides a potential solution of Kerr effect error in Brillouin fiber-optic gyroscope.

Characteristics of SBS dynamics in single-mode optical fibres

A. A. Gordeev, V F Efimkov, Iosif G. Zubarev +2 more

The characteristics of the gain of Stokes pulses in single-mode optical fibres by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) of monochromatic and nonmonochromatic pump signals have been investigated by numerical simulation using a spectral approach. Conditions under which ‘slow light’ (caused by a group delay) can be implemented are found (it is reasonable to apply this term to a process in which a pulse is delayed with conservation of its shape). The plane-wave interaction model is shown to describe adequately the dynamics of this process in single-mode fibres. A number of gain modes are investigated for Stokes pulses with different time structures upon monochromatic and nonmonochromatic excitation. A new data transfer technique is proposed, which is based on the conversion of stepwise phase modulation of the input Stokes signal into amplitude modulation of the output signal.

Polarization attributes of stimulated Brillouin scattering slow light in fiber

Avi Zadok, Avishay Eyal, Moshe Tur +1 more

The polarization-related properties of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) processes in long, randomly birefringent, standard optical fibers are examined. Evolution equations for the pump and signal waves, in the presence of both birefringence and SBS, are provided in Jones and Stokes spaces. It is shown that in the undepleted pump regime, the amplification of the SBS signal wave is equivalent to that of a linear medium with polarization-dependent gain. The process is associated with a pair of orthogonal states of polarizations (SOPs) of the signal wave, which undergo maximum and minimum amplification. In long, standard fibers, the Jones vector of the probe SOP which corresponds to maximum amplification is aligned with the complex conjugate of the pump wave Jones vector. The maximum and minimum SBS gain coefficients in such fibers equal two-thirds and one-third of the gain coefficient that is predicted by scalar theory, respectively. The large differential gain of the SBS process gives rise to an effective pulling of the amplified Stokes probe wave SOP, towards that of maximum amplification. Lastly, Stokes wave pulses that are aligned for maximum and minimum amplification experience different group delays, which manifest as polarization-related distortions in SBS slow light setups.
