On the spontaneous-coherence-transfer-induced sign change of a sub-natural-width nonlinear resonance

Abstract

A simple theoretical model is proposed which describes the positive sign of the nonlinear absorption resonances in the experiments of Akul’shin et al. [Phys. Rev. A 57 , 2996 (1998)]. An analytical expression for the linear response to a weak probe field is obtained in the weak-saturation limit. It is shown that the positive sign of sub-natural-width resonances is due to the spontaneous transfer of low-frequency coherence from an excited level to the ground state.

A simple theoretical model describing the positive sign of subnatural-width absorption resonances in the recent experiment of Akulshin and co-workers [Phys. Rev. A 57, 2996 (1998)] is proposed. An analytical expression for the linear response to the weak probe field is found in the low-saturation limit with respect to the control field. It is shown that the positive sign of subnatural resonance is caused by the spontaneous transfer of the light-induced coherence from the excited level to the ground one.

Low-Frequency Coherence Excitation in the Ground State Manifold and Saturation of the Quasi-Two-Level Atom by a Resonant Field

R. N. Shakhmuratov, J. Odeurs, Romain Coussement +1 more

The excitation of the low-frequency coherence in the ground state atomic sublevels by a coherent field driving the transition between these sublevels and the remote excited state is considered. The condition of the population trapping in the dark, nonabsorbing, state, which is a particular coherence of the ground state sub-levels, is analyzed. It is shown that the saturated width of the dark resonance is much larger than the line width of the two-level atom saturated by a resonant field

Electromagnetically induced absorption and electromagnetically induced transparency for optical transitions F g → F e in the field of elliptically polarized waves

Д. Б. Лазебный, Denis V. Brazhnikov, А. В. Тайченачев +2 more

Nonlinear laser spectroscopy is considered in the scheme of two collinear waves with arbitrary elliptical polarizations. Emphasis is placed on investigating the nonlinear corrections in the absorption spectrum of one of the waves. The spontaneous transfer of low-frequency Zeeman coherence is shown to affect the sign of the subnatural-width resonance. For a closed transition, the direction of the resonance profile has been found to depend only on the angular momenta F e and F g . On this basis, a classification has been developed for various transitions by the direction of the subnatural-width resonance profile.

Saturation and self-saturation effects in the field of intense laser waves: The J = 1 − J = 1 transition

Sergey G. Rautian, Э. Г. Сапрыкин, А. А. Черненко

The shape of the resonance of a saturated absorption is calculated at an arbitrary intensity of a probe field. It is revealed that, in the case of orthogonal polarizations of strong and probe fields, an increase in the intensity of the probe field can invert the shape of the nonlinear resonance of clearing of the medium, changing it to the resonance of absorption. The saturation of optical transitions by intrinsic spontaneous radiation increases the contrast of the inverted resonance of saturation and narrows its width. In the case of parallel polarizations of the optical fields, an absorption peak can arise in the shape of the nonlinear resonance upon splitting of the lower state.

Effects of Saturation and Self-Saturation in Unidirectional-Wave Spectroscopy of Transition between Levels with a Total Moment of J = 1

Э. Г. Сапрыкин, А. А. Черненко

Abstract Nonlinear absorption of a probe field in a system of degenerate levels of an atom characterized by a total moment of J = 1 in unidirectional waves is studied analytically and numerically taking into account saturation by its own spontaneous emission (OSE). The trends in changes of the amplitude and frequency characteristics of the nonlinear resonance associated with open and closed types of transitions for different polarizations of the waves that are introduced by self-saturation are established. Specific manifestations of the effect, including those related to magnetic coherence of levels, are revealed.
