Abstract

We investigate the position localization of a polarized atom interacting with an off-resonant quantized standing-wave field. We show that a coherent cavity field achieves a higher resolution than a classical field. An almost perfect localization is possible when the atom passes through several identically prepared cavities.

Sub-wavelength atom localization via Autler–Townes spectroscopy: effect of the quantized field

Tasnim Azim, Manzoor Ikram, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

A scheme for the measurement of the position distribution of an atom by passing it through a standing wave field inside a cavity is discussed. The determination of the position distribution function localizes the atom within the sub-wavelength region of the standing wave. The dependence of the atom localization on the photon statistics of the cavity field is studied. The degree of resolution increases dramatically for a cascaded cavity system.

Atomic-position localization via dual measurement

Hyunchul Nha, Jai-Hyung Lee, Joon-Sung Chang +1 more

We study localization of atomic position when a three-level atom interacts with a quantized standing-wave field in the Ramsey interferometer setup. Both the field quadrature amplitude and the atomic internal state are measured to obtain the atomic-position information. It is found that this dual-measurement scheme produces an interference pattern superimposed on a diffractionlike pattern in the atomic-position distribution, where the former pattern originates from the state-selective measurement and the latter from the field measurement. The present scheme results in a better resolution in the position localization than the field-alone measurement schemes. We also discuss the measurement-correlated mechanical action of the standing-wave field on the atom in the light of Popper's test.

Ramsey Interferometry with a Single Photon Field in Cavity QED

S. Osnaghi, Arno Rauschenbeutel, Patrice Bertet +4 more

We present the experimental realisation of a cavity QED atom interferometer based on two consecutive resonant interactions of a circular Rydberg atom with the field mode of a high Q microwave resonator that is initially prepared in the vacuum state. The interferometer scheme is analogous to the Ramsey method with the classical field replaced by the quantum field stored in the cavity mode. We demonstrate the possibility to use this technique to probe, by dispersive interaction, the field stored in a second mode of the resonator.

Localization of the relative positions of two atoms in the presence of optical feedback

Cheng Gui-Ping, Zheng Jun, Wenwu Deng +2 more

We have investigated the localization of the two atoms passing through a standing wave in an optical cavity by measuring the field quadrature. It was found that the localization of the two atoms can be better preserved in the absence of the damping of cavity. If the damping of cavity is taken into account, the compromise of atomic-position localization resulting from the damping of cavity can be decreased by feeding back into the cavity part of the output signal.

Atom localization via interference of dark resonances

Chengpu Liu, Shangqing Gong, Dongchao Cheng +2 more

A scheme of atom localization based on the interference of resonance of double-dark states is proposed, in which the atom interacts with a classical standing-wave field. It is found that the localization property is significantly improved due to the interaction of double-dark resonances. It is realized that the atom is localized just at the nodes of the standing-wave field with higher precision. Moreover, an improvement by a factor of 2 in the detecting probability of a single atom within the subwavelength domain can be achieved by adjusting the probe-field detuning. This scheme shows more advantages than other schemes of atom localization.

Sub-half-wavelength atom localization of a V-type three-level atom via relative phase

Mostafa Sahrai, H. Tajalli

Coherent interaction of an atom with a position-dependent standing-wave cavity field can impart position information of a moving atom through the cavity leading to subwavelength atom localization. We show that the position of the atom along the standing-wave field is determined when the probe-field absorption is measured. We find out that absorption of the weak probe field at a certain frequency leads to subwavelength localization of the atom in either of the two half-wavelength regions of the cavity field by appropriate choice of the system parameters. In addition, we demonstrate that the position information of a three-level V-shaped moving atom strongly depends on the relative phase of applied fields. By appropriate choice of the relative phase, it is shown that the scheme can be used for localizing an atom flying through the standing-wave field to the sub-half-wavelength domain.
