Abstract

Using multi-stage periodic poled lithium niobate waveguides, an all-optical NOT gate with the output extinction ratio of 17 dB is proposed in this paper. Without changing the wavelength, the wavelength of the output inverted data stream is the same as that of the input data stream.

PPLN-Based Flexible Optical Logic and Gate

Jian Wang, Junqiang Sun, Qizhen Sun +4 more

All-optical flexible 20-Gb/s logic and gate based on cascaded sum- and difference-frequency generation in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The theoretical analyses further indicate that 40-, 80-, and 160-Gb/s ultrahigh-speed logic and operations can potentially be performed. Moreover, it is expected that the and output can be tuned in a wide wavelength range (67 nm) with slight fluctuation of the Q-factor and extinction ratio.

Phase-regenerative wavelength conversion in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides

Sheng Liu, Kwang Jo Lee, Francesca R. Parmigiani +4 more

We propose and experimentally demonstrate phase-regenerative wavelength conversion in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides, using either: a single-stage implementation based on a simultaneous combination of two cascaded second-order nonlinear effects in a single periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, or a two-stage implementation where two separate devices are used in sequence to give rise to the same nonlinear effects. The phase regeneration properties of the proposed wavelength conversion schemes are also investigated.

All-optical decision gate circuits using cascaded periodically poled lithium niobate devices

Yutaka Fukuchi, Daiki Minamide, Masaru Yamamoto

We propose a cascaded periodically poled lithium niobate device. In the device, two lithium niobate crystals with different quasi-phase matching wavelengths are cascaded. We numerically show that the cascaded periodically poled lithium niobate device has an all-optical level discriminating characteristic, thus enabling a compact and stable ultra-fast 3R circuit.

3:1 optical frequency division by difference-frequency mixing in periodically poled lithium niobate

P. Nee, N. C. Wong

We report on the demonstration of optical frequency division by 3 via two successive stages of difference frequency generation. Two input sources at 532 nm and 798 nm generated an output at 1596 nm and the mixing between the 798-nm input and the 1596-nm output generated a second 1596-nm output. Both difference frequency mixing stages were implemented in a single piece of quasi-phase matched periodically poled lithium niobate. By measuring the beat frequency between the two 1596-nm an exact frequency ratio of 3:2 was obtained between two input sources. A signal-to-noise ratio of 27 dB was obtained for a resolution bandwidth of 100 kHz.

Spatial ultrafast switching and frequency conversion in lithium niobate waveguide arrays

Thomas Pertsch, Robert Iwanow, Roland Schiek +5 more

We demonstrate phase-insensitive, ultrafast, all-optical spatial switching and frequency conversion in quadratically nonlinear waveguide arrays in periodically poled lithium niobate. Routing of milliwatt signals with wavelengths in the communication band (1550 nm) is achieved without pulse distortions by parametric interaction with a control beam with 10-W power and wavelengths near 775 nm.
