Abstract

Hyperfine splittings for the 39 K and 41 K isotopes and the isotope shift for the 4s 2 S 1/2 → 6s 2 S 1/2 two-photon transition have been measured using sub-Doppler fluorescence spectroscopy. We have accurately measured the transition isotope shift, and a discrepancy has been found in the earlier reported transition isotope shift value, which has been corrected. The resulting hyperfine splitting values of 418.2 (5) and 230.4 (1.3) MHz for the 39 K and 41 K isotopes respectively are in agreement with previous measurements. The precision of the absolute frequency values for the two-photon transition has been improved by about two orders. Our measured magnetic dipole constants for the upper 6 2 S 1/2 state for the 39 K and the 41 K isotopes are consistent with the earlier measured values.

Isotope shift and hyperfine splitting of the 4s→5p transition in potassium

Alexandra Behrle, Marco Koschorreck, Michael Köhl

We have investigated the $4s {}^{2}{S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5p {}^{2}{P}_{1/2}$ transition (${D}_{1}$ line) of the potassium isotopes $^{39}\mathrm{K}$, $^{40}\mathrm{K}$, and $^{41}\mathrm{K}$ using Doppler-free laser saturation spectroscopy. Our measurements reveal the hyperfine splitting of the $5p {}^{2}{P}_{1/2}$ state of $^{40}\mathrm{K}$, and we have determined the specific mass shift and the nuclear field shift constants for the blue (405 nm) ${D}_{1}$ line.

Absolute hyperfine energy levels and isotope shift of Rb 5S–6S two-photon transition

Seth Orson, Carson McLaughlin, M. D. Lindsay +1 more

Abstract Using a Rb cell and a wavemeter, with a Doppler-free two-photon transition near 993 nm, we have measured the four hyperfine components (two isotopes, Δ F = 0) of the 5S–6S transition, finding the absolute energies of those transitions to a spectral resolution of 0.002 cm −1 = 60 MHz. We find the (87 minus 85) isotope shift of the 5S–6S transition to be +94(12) MHz. Using our single frequency cw laser with focused intensity up to 10 4 W cm −2 at the cell, we find no AC Stark or light shift of the lines at 6 MHz spectral resolution. We find no density shift of the lines at 6 MHz spectral resolution, for a range of Rb atom densities from 3 × 10 11 to 5 × 10 13 atoms/cm 3 .

Observation of the hyperfine structure of the 2S1/2−2D5/2 transition in 87Sr+

G. P. Barwood, K. Gao, Patrick Robert Gill +2 more

The hyperfine structure of the ${}^{2}{S}_{1/2}{\ensuremath{-}}^{2}{D}_{5/2}$ quadrupole transition at 674 nm in ${}^{87}{\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}$ has been observed. The ion was confined in a Paul trap and cooled using laser radiation at 422 and 1092 nm. The quadrupole transition was observed by monitoring quantum jumps in the 422-nm fluorescence. The odd isotope of strontium has ``clock'' transitions independent of the first-order Zeeman shift and the ${}^{2}{D}_{5/2}$ state hyperfine structure constants have been determined as ${A}_{{D}_{5/2}}=2.1743(14)\mathrm{MHz}$ and ${B}_{{D}_{5/2}}=49.11(6)\mathrm{MHz}.$ Standard uncertainties have been added in parentheses. These values allow the second-order Zeeman shifts to be calculated. The ${}^{88}{\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}{\ensuremath{-}}^{87}{\mathrm{Sr}}^{+}$ isotope shift for the 674-nm quadrupole transition has been measured to be 247.99(4) MHz.

Spectroscopic study of the cycling transition 4s[3/2]2 – 4p[5/2]3 at 811.8 nm in Ar39 : Hyperfine structure and isotope shift

W. D. Williams, Zheng‐Tian Lu, Kenneth Rudinger +3 more

Doppler-free saturated absorption spectroscopy is performed on an enriched radioactive $^{39}\mathrm{Ar}$ sample. The spectrum of the $3{s}^{2}3{p}^{5}4s[3/2]{}_{2}$--$3{s}^{2}3{p}^{5}4p[5/2]{}_{3}$ cycling transition at 811.8 nm is recorded, and its isotope shift between $^{39}\mathrm{Ar}$ and $^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ is derived. The hyperfine coupling constants $A$ and $B$ for both the $4s[3/2]{}_{2}$ and $4p[5/2]{}_{3}$ energy levels in $^{39}\mathrm{Ar}$ are also determined. The results partially disagree with a recently published measurement of the same transition. Based on earlier measurements as well as the current work, the isotope shift and hyperfine structure of the corresponding transition in $^{37}\mathrm{Ar}$ are also calculated. These spectroscopic data are essential for the realization of laser trapping and cooling of $^{37,39}\mathrm{Ar}$.

Experimental isotope shifts of the 5 2S1/2 state and low-lying excited states of Rb

Leland Aldridge, P. L. Gould, Edward E. Eyler

By combining a recent precise measurement of the ionization energy of ${}^{87}$Rb with previous measurements of the ground-state hyperfine structure and ionization energy of ${}^{85}$Rb, an accurate value for the ${}^{85}\text{Rb}{\ensuremath{-}}^{87}\text{Rb}$ isotope shift of the 5 ${}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{S}_{1/2}$ ground state can be determined. In turn, comparison with additional spectroscopic data makes it possible to evaluate isotope shifts for the low-lying excited states, which are accurate in most cases to about 1 MHz. For the 5 ${}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{S}_{1/2}$ and 5 ${}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{P}_{3/2}$ states, the specific mass-shift contribution can be determined in addition to the total shift. This information is particularly useful for spectroscopic analysis of transitions to Rydberg states and for tests of atomic theory.

Isotope shifts and hyperfine splittings of the 3988-nm Yb i line

K. Deilamian, John D. Gillaspy, Daniel E. Kelleher

We report the first observation to our knowledge of the 6s2 S10-6s6p P11∘ transition (398.8 nm) of 168Yb. The relative position of this spectral line was directly determined by using a laser sideband technique to simultaneously probe pairs of lines. The hyperfine structure of 171Yb and the isotope shifts of 170Yb, 171Yb, and 174Yb were determined to an accuracy of better than 6 MHz and found to differ by as much as 23 MHz from previous results. By using photon-burst spectroscopy to carry out these measurements we obtained subnatural linewidths and fully resolved the 170Yb and 171Yb lines, which otherwise overlap in fluorescence.
