Abstract

By combining a recent precise measurement of the ionization energy of ${}^{87}$Rb with previous measurements of the ground-state hyperfine structure and ionization energy of ${}^{85}$Rb, an accurate value for the ${}^{85}\text{Rb}{\ensuremath{-}}^{87}\text{Rb}$ isotope shift of the 5 ${}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{S}_{1/2}$ ground state can be determined. In turn, comparison with additional spectroscopic data makes it possible to evaluate isotope shifts for the low-lying excited states, which are accurate in most cases to about 1 MHz. For the 5 ${}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{S}_{1/2}$ and 5 ${}^{2}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}{P}_{3/2}$ states, the specific mass-shift contribution can be determined in addition to the total shift. This information is particularly useful for spectroscopic analysis of transitions to Rydberg states and for tests of atomic theory.

Spectroscopy of Sr 87 triplet Rydberg states

Roger Ding, J. D. Whalen, S. K. Kanungo +4 more

A combined experimental and theoretical spectroscopic study of high-$n, 30\ensuremath{\lesssim}n\ensuremath{\lesssim}100$, triplet $S$ and $D$ Rydberg states in $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}$ is presented. $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}$ has a large nuclear spin $I=9/2$, and at high-$n$ the hyperfine interaction becomes comparable to, or even larger than, the fine structure and singlet-triplet splittings, which poses a considerable challenge both for precision spectroscopy and for theory. For high-$n S$ states, the hyperfine shifts are evaluated nonperturbatively, taking advantage of earlier spectroscopic data for the $I=0$ isotope $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$, which results in good agreement with the present measurements. For the $D$ states, this procedure is reversed by first extracting from the present $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}$ measurements the energies of the ${}^{3}{D}_{1,2,3}$ states to be expected for isotopes without hyperfine structure ($^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$), which allows the determination of corrected quantum defects in the high-$n$ limit.

Isotope shift and hyperfine structure measurements of 4s 2S1/2→ 6s 2S1/2two-photon transition of potassium isotopes

P. V. Kiran Kumar, Manda V. Suryanarayana

Hyperfine splittings for the 39 K and 41 K isotopes and the isotope shift for the 4s 2 S 1/2 → 6s 2 S 1/2 two-photon transition have been measured using sub-Doppler fluorescence spectroscopy. We have accurately measured the transition isotope shift, and a discrepancy has been found in the earlier reported transition isotope shift value, which has been corrected. The resulting hyperfine splitting values of 418.2 (5) and 230.4 (1.3) MHz for the 39 K and 41 K isotopes respectively are in agreement with previous measurements. The precision of the absolute frequency values for the two-photon transition has been improved by about two orders. Our measured magnetic dipole constants for the upper 6 2 S 1/2 state for the 39 K and the 41 K isotopes are consistent with the earlier measured values.

Experimental studies of high-lying Rydberg states in atomic rubidium

Sylvain Liberman, Jacques Pinard

This paper summarizes a long series of experiments that have been done on Rydberg states of Rb. The basic experimental technique that has been used is atomic-beam laser spectroscopy which allows both low-resolution and high-resolution studies. Excitation of Rydberg states is provided by single-photon absorption from a suitably frequency-doubled rhodamine $6G$ tunable laser. Detection is done by field ionization and ion counting. These techniques have allowed us to study the critical ionizing field, which has been found to follow classical, hydrogenic behavior closely. Rydberg states of Rb have been observed from $n=28$ up to $n>100$. High-resolution spectroscopic studies have led to measurement of the fine structure for $\mathrm{np}$ levels located between $n=28$ and $n=60$, as well as the isotope shift of the ground state, $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\nu}=(172\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}15)$ MHz. Anomalies in the intensity ratio of the doublet $5s\ensuremath{-}np$ transitions have been observed and interpreted as relativistic effects. Perturbations by weak and strong dc electric field are reported. In the case of weak electric fields it is possible to evaluate the polarizability. In the case of strong dc electric fields, new phenomena have been observed and analyzed. We also find experimental evidence of selective photoionization in the presence of an appropriate dc electric field, which could have some applications in laser isotope separation. Finally, we give the preliminary results of an experiment on the effect of a strong nonresonant electromagnetic field on high-lying Rydberg states.

Observation of hyperfine structure and isotope shift in autoionizing states

R. J. de Graaff, Erwin A. J. M. Bente, W. Hogervorst +1 more

We report the first observation of hyperfine structure and isotope shift in autoionizing states. This structure was investigated in the $5{d}_{\frac{3}{2}}\mathrm{nf} J=4,5(n=36\ensuremath{-}40)$ barium Rydberg series, excited from the recently localized metastable $5{d}^{2}^{1}G_{4}$ level. An isotope-selective detection method was used in a cw laser spectroscopic experiment on a collimated atomic beam. The experimental data provide valuable additional information for the analyses of these doubly excited series.

Hyperfine structure and isotope shifts in the 5955-nm (a^3F_2–z^5F_1) ground-state transition in Zr I

Peter Hannaford

Two recent determinations of the (91)Zr hyperfine structure in the z(5)F(1) level of Zr I are found to differ by a factor of almost 5. A reexamination of the data confirms the results obtained in our previous investigation: A(z(5)F(1)) = 273.6 +/- 0.3 MHz, B(z(5)F(1)) = 5.9 +/- 0.6 MHz, and hence deltav = -99.6 +/- 1.0 MHz for the (91)Zr-(90)Zr isotope shift in the 595.5-nm (a(3)F(2)-z(5)F(1)) ground-state transition.

Absolute hyperfine energy levels and isotope shift of Rb 5S–6S two-photon transition

Seth Orson, Carson McLaughlin, M. D. Lindsay +1 more

Abstract Using a Rb cell and a wavemeter, with a Doppler-free two-photon transition near 993 nm, we have measured the four hyperfine components (two isotopes, Δ F = 0) of the 5S–6S transition, finding the absolute energies of those transitions to a spectral resolution of 0.002 cm −1 = 60 MHz. We find the (87 minus 85) isotope shift of the 5S–6S transition to be +94(12) MHz. Using our single frequency cw laser with focused intensity up to 10 4 W cm −2 at the cell, we find no AC Stark or light shift of the lines at 6 MHz spectral resolution. We find no density shift of the lines at 6 MHz spectral resolution, for a range of Rb atom densities from 3 × 10 11 to 5 × 10 13 atoms/cm 3 .
