Effects of spatial interference on intensityintensity correlations in collective two-atom emission

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate the effects of the spatial variation of driving-laser phase in a collective two-atom system on the intensity–intensity correlations of the resonant fluorescence. It is shown that the intensity–intensity correlations exhibit quite different characteristics for the different values of the spatial phase of the laser at the position of the two atoms in both cases of the weak and strong driving lasers. Our results suggest that the intensity–intensity correlations can serve as a probe of the spatial interference effect arising from the spatial variation of the laser phase.

Intensity correlations in resonance fluorescence from coupled two-level atoms

Marco Wiegand

The normalised intensity correlation function of resonance fluorescence radiation from two-level atoms is studied in various respects. In the first part of the paper the author discusses only interference effects for several uncoupled, linearly arranged, atoms. It is shown that, depending on the distance between the atoms, the direction of observation and the strength of the driving field, an antibunching effect as well as a very big bunching effect may be observed. In the second part of the paper he studies for the case of two atoms and weak external fields the influence of the interaction between the atoms by means of a perturbation theory. It is shown that the coupling between the atoms strongly modifies the normalised intensity correlation function in comparison with the case of uncoupled atoms. He takes as the driving field a coherent external field as well as laser light and thermal light.

Collective atomic effects in resonance fluorescence

G. S. Agarwal, A. C. Brown, Lorenzo M. Narducci +1 more

We suggest that the statistical properties of the scattered radiation in resonance-fluorescence experiments may be affected significantly by the existence of atomic correlations. The scattered light spectrum from two- and three-atom collective systems has been calculated and compared with the one-atom spectrum. The differences are quite significant for weak fields, but become less pronounced as the intensity of the driving field is increased. In addition, we have calculated the scattered intensity correlation function for collectively interacting systems, and found that its behavior is very different from that of the single-atom intensity correlation function, both for weak and strong incident fields. The implications of our findings for the observation of photon antibunching are also discussed.

Quantum Interferences in Cooperative Dicke Emission from Spatial Variation of the Laser Phase

Sumanta Das, G. S. Agarwal, Marlan O. Scully

We report the generation of a new quantum interference effect in spontaneous emission from a resonantly driven system of two identical two-level atoms due to the spatial variation of the laser phase at the positions of the atoms. This interference affects significantly the spectral features of the emitted radiation and the quantum entanglement in the system. The interference leads to dynamic coupling of the populations and coherences in a basis, determined by the laser phase and represents a kind of vacuum mediated superexchange between the symmetric and antisymmetric states.

Interference of cooperative resonant fluorescence from two distant systems of atoms

Elena Galeamov, N. A. Enaki

The possibility of realization of collective resonance fluorescence of extended systems of atoms in the strong travel and standing laser waves it is demonstrated. The influence of regular arrangement of the atoms in interaction with the laser pulls on the fluorescence intensity is analyzed. Taking in to account that such interference can be realize in two distant atomic ensembles we analyzed the collective interference phenomena between the fluorescent fields in the farther field detection region. These effects depend on the exchange integrals between systems of atoms through vacuum fluorescence field. The fluorescence spectrum of these atoms is found. About similar coherence interference experiment of spontaneous emission of light from two distant solid-state ensembles of atoms that are coherently excited by a short laser pulse it is reported in the papers [1,2]. For example, in paper [1] it is observed the entanglement between two distant atomic ensembles located in distinct apparatuses on different tables. Quantum interference in the detection of a photon emitted by one of the samples projects the otherwise independent ensembles into an entangled state with one joint excitation stored remotely in 105 atoms at each site. The experiment [2] relate about the ensembles of erbium ions doped into two LiNbO3 crystals with channel wave guides, which are placed in the two arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The light that is spontaneously emitted after the excitation pulse shows first-order interference. By a strong collective enhancement of the emission, the atoms behave as ideal two-level quantum systems and no which-path information is left in the atomic ensembles after emission of a photon. Influence of geometry of the sample on the coherent phenomena between two distant systems of atoms in this report is presented.

Effects of laser-field fluctuations on the intensity correlation of resonance fluorescence

S. N. Dixit, A. T. Georges

The effects of amplitude, phase, and frequency fluctuations in the exciting laser field on the intensity correlation of resonance fluorescence from a single two-level atom are investigated. Numerical results are presented for both weak and strong excitation with narrow-band and broadband laser fields having Lorentzian or Gaussian line shapes.

Collective resonance fluorescence in an intense laser field with phase and amplitude fluctuations

A.S. Shumovsky, R. Tanaś, Tran Quang

The collective resonance fluorescence from a system of two-level atoms resonantly driven by a strong laser field with the phase and amplitude fluctuations is considered. The effect of the laser field fluctuations on the spectrum as well as the degrees of the second-order coherence of the fluorescent field is discussed in detail for the off-resonance case.
