Time-dependent effects in near-resonant scattering of laser light on the three-level atom: I. phenomenological description

Abstract

The density-matrix approach is used to describe the dynamics of thallium-type dressed atoms in a gaseous environment. The effects of spatial degeneracy are accounted for. It is shown that the stationary contribution to the spectrum is not always dominant and may even be negligible. Thus, a consistent description requires the use of the time-dependent spectrum such as that of Eberly and Wodkiewicz (1977). In this connection a new interpretation of the experiment on near resonant scattering of light on thallium-type atoms is proposed.

Observation of scattered light with time-dependent near-resonant laser excitation

Stefano Cavalieri, M. Matera, Massimo Mazzoni +1 more

Near-resonant scattering of a pulsed laser beam by strontium atoms is studied. The spectral distribution of the scattered radiation has been measured and compared with the spectrum calculated from the dressed-state picture of the laser-atom interaction in the adiabatic approximation. The experimental results are well described by taking into account the temporal and spatial distribution of the laser intensity.

Atomic collisions in the presence of laser radiation: Time dependence and the asymptotic wave function

Paul L. DeVries, Thomas F. George

A time-dependent, wave-packet description of atomic collisions in the presence of laser radiation is extracted from the more conventional time-independent, stationary-state description. This approach resolves certain difficulties of interpretation in the time-independent approach which arise in the case of asymptotic near resonance. In the two-state model investigated, the approach predicts the existence of three spherically scattered waves in this asymptotically near-resonant case.

Theory of near-resonance scattering of a laser beam on alkali atoms perturbed by a foreign gas

Janusz Czub, Jan Fiutak

The spectrum of resonance fluorescence and scattered light is calculated, on the basis of the dressed-atom approach, in the case of joined S 1/2 -P 1/2 and S 1/2 -P 3/2 transitions. The dependence of the steady-state density matrix on detuning and field strength is investigated for linear polarisation of the laser beam. The influence of the polarisation of the laser beam and of the scattered light on spectral distribution is discussed.

Time-dependent effects in near-resonant scattering of laser light on the three-level atom. II. Collisional relaxation in the presence of a laser beam

Janusz Czub, Jan Fiutak

For pt.I see ibid., vol.15, p.4127 (1982). The master equation has been rederived with particular emphasis on the influence of the frequency and strength of the field on the relaxation process. A modification of the master equation is also proposed and the results are discussed for the three-level atom. The time dependence of the spectrum is analysed.

Time-dependent spectra of a strongly driven three-level atom

Arundhati S. Jayarao, S. V. Lawande, Richard D’Souza

Time-dependent features of the fluorescence radiation from a strongly driven three-level atom in a Raman configuration are studied applying the Eberly-W\'odkiewicz counting-rate definition of the spectrum. Using our earlier formalism, where we assume that one or both of the driving fields are intense, we obtain analytical expressions for the time-dependent fluorescence spectra. We have also studied the influence on the transient spectrum of the initial preparation of the atom in three different dressed states.

Time dependence of multiphoton scattering processes

P. Stehle

The time-dependent amplitudes describing the evolution of the state of a system consisting of an atom illuminated by a single-mode laser starting at time t=0 are given. They are used to derive the time dependence of the spectrum of resonance fluorescence of a three-level atom and to obtain a description of the time and frequency correlation of successively scattered photons.
