Abstract

We propose and realize a method of high intensity generation of broadband biphotons and achieve its value up to 150 THz. The source is based on a thin BBO crystal with a thickness of 100 microns, in which spontaneous parametric down-conversion takes place. To compensate for the intensity decrease of the down-conversion caused by the small thickness of the crystal, it is placed inside the cavity of an Ar+ laser. In general, this experiment relates to the widely discussed problem of two-photon shaping in the frequency and/or angular domain.

Parametric generation of broadband biphotons in a periodic sequence of thin crystals

E G Lariontsev

Collinear parametric scattering of light under type-II phase matching is considered in a periodic sequence of nonlinear cells made of BBO crystals. The possibilities of reducing the duration of the wave packets of biphotons and increasing their intensity under monochromatic pumping are studied. The analysis is based on the account of dispersion of the refractive indices using Sellmeier equations. The obtained results allow one to conclude that at an appropriate choice of the crystal thicknesses and the number of cells, it is possible to significantly increase the flux of broadband biphotons and obtain extremely short quantum packets. It is shown that for sufficiently small thicknesses of individual crystals (layers), this system exhibits a fine structure in the spectrum of biphotons: with an increase in the number of cells (layers) the broadband spectrum is divided into a number of narrow bands and the number of these bands increases. When use is made of a nonlinear BBO crystal, this method allows one to obtain ultrashort packets of biphotons with duration . Compared with a different method of generation of broadband biphotons, which is based on the use of quasi-phase-matched periodically poled crystals, the method studied in this paper does not necessitate the need for the phase modulation of a biphoton to be converted into the amplitude modulation.

Polarization tomography of a narrow-band biphoton field

A. E. Mihailov, Латыпов Ильнур Зиннурович, Alexander A. Kalinkin +3 more

Narrow-band orthogonally polarized collinear frequency-degenerate biphotons are generated in the process of the spontaneous parametric down-conversion of light in a nonlinear BBO crystal placed in an optical resonator. Quantum polarization tomography and polarization transformation of the generated biphoton states are performed. The results from our experiment agree well with theoretical calculations.

Generation of narrow-band correlated photon pairs by spontaneous down conversion in a cavity

Латыпов Ильнур Зиннурович, Alexander A. Kalinkin, A. V. Shkalikov +2 more

The problem of generating a narrow-band biphoton field during spontaneous parametric down conversion of light in a quadratic nonlinear medium in a cavity is discussed. It is shown that, in the case of double resonance (for signal and idle fields), the form of the single-photon wave packet is biexponential and has a half-width determined by the photon life time in the cavity. An experiment is carried out on the generation of narrow-band biphotons in a crystal of lithium iodine with I-type matching in a frequency degenerate collinear regime. The second-order correlation function of the cavity-enhanced biphotons is measured using the electric nanosecond time delay line.

Broadband biphotons in a single spatial mode

Konstantin G. Katamadze, N. A. Borshchevskaya, I. V. Dyakonov +2 more

We demonstrate the experimental technique for generating a spatial single-mode broadband biphoton field. The method is based on a dispersive optical element which precisely tailors the structure of the type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) frequency angular spectrum in order to shift different spectral components to a single angular mode. Spatial mode filtering is realized by coupling biphotons into a single-mode optical fiber.

Ultra-broadband SPDC for spectrally far separated photon pairs

Aron Vanselow, Paul Kaufmann, Helen M. Chrzanowski +1 more

Photon pairs from spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) are important for a wide range of quantum optics experiments with spectral properties such as their bandwidths often being a crucial concern. Here we show the generic existence of particular phase-matching conditions in quasi-phase-matched KTP, MgO:LN, and SLT crystals that lead to ultra-broadband, widely nondegenerate photon pairs. It is based on the existence of group-velocity-matched, far apart wavelength pairs and, for 2 mm long crystals, results in SPDC bandwidths between 15 and 25 THz for photon pairs with the idler photon in the technologically relevant mid-IR range of 3-5 μm and the signal photon in the near-IR below 1100 nm. We experimentally demonstrate this type of broadband phase matching in ppKTP crystals for photon pairs centered at 800 and 3800 nm and measure a bandwidth of 15 THz. This novel method of generating broadband photon pairs will be highly beneficial for SPDC-based imaging, spectroscopy, refractometry, and optical coherence tomography with undetected mid-IR photons.

Generation of broadband spontaneous parametric fluorescence using multiple bulk nonlinear crystals

Masayuki Okano, Ryo Okamoto, Akira Tanaka +2 more

We propose a novel method for generating broadband spontaneous parametric fluorescence by using a set of bulk nonlinear crystals (NLCs). We also demonstrate this scheme experimentally. Our method employs a superposition of spontaneous parametric fluorescence spectra generated using multiple bulk NLCs. A typical bandwidth of 160 nm (73 THz) with a degenerate wavelength of 808 nm was achieved using two β-barium-borate (BBO) crystals, whereas a typical bandwidth of 75 nm (34 THz) was realized using a single BBO crystal. We also observed coincidence counts of generated photon pairs in a non-collinear configuration. The bandwidth could be further broadened by increasing the number of NLCs. Our demonstration suggests that a set of four BBO crystals could realize a bandwidth of approximately 215 nm (100 THz). We also discuss the stability of Hong-Ou-Mandel two-photon interference between the parametric fluorescence generated by this scheme. Our simple scheme is easy to implement with conventional NLCs and does not require special devices.
