Abstract

We demonstrate the experimental technique for generating a spatial single-mode broadband biphoton field. The method is based on a dispersive optical element which precisely tailors the structure of the type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) frequency angular spectrum in order to shift different spectral components to a single angular mode. Spatial mode filtering is realized by coupling biphotons into a single-mode optical fiber.

Generation and Application of Broadband Biphoton Fields (Brief Review)

Konstantin G. Katamadze, A. V. Pashchenko, Anna V. Romanova +1 more

Biphoton fields obtained in spontaneous parametric down-conversion are among the main tools of modern quantum optics. Temporal correlations between photons in the pair play a key role; the broader the spectrum of the biphoton field, the stronger the correlations. Broadband biphoton fields and their main characteristics have been described in detail, their possible applications have been listed, and the main methods of their generation have been presented.

Generation of broadband biphotons and their compression in an optical fiber

G. Kh. Kitaeva, Maria V. Chekhova, O. A. Shumilkina

The generation of biphoton wave packets with a broad spectrum owing to quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a crystal with an aperiodic poling has been considered. Biphotons at the exit of such a sample are not Fourier limited; i.e., their correlation time is much larger than the inverse width of the spectrum. It has been shown that if the inverse grating vector varies linearly along the sample length, the generated biphoton wave packets can be compressed in time by transmitting two-photon light through an optical fiber.

We test two-dimensional TPSA of biphoton light emitted via ultrafast spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) using the effect of group-velocity dispersion in optical fibres. Further, we apply this technique to demonstrate the engineering of biphoton spectral properties by acting on the pump pulse shape.

DWDM-Compatible Entanglement Distribution using a Biphoton Frequency Comb

Toshiki Kobayashi, Tomohiro Yamazaki, Rintaro Fujimoto +5 more

Photonic entanglement distribution with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology is a promising method for increasing capacity in quantum communication. So far, various experiments [1], [2] have been actively conducted by using broadband entangled photon pairs based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) with WDM-compatible spectral filters. However, the separation of broadband photon pairs over the channels inevitably wastes a large amount of photon energy for sufficient suppression of channel crosstalk, which causes photon pairs to have a low brightness. The cavity-enhanced SPDC can be used to overcome this problem. Because the generated photon pairs are gathered into resonant peaks with a spectral spacing determined by the cavity, the joint spectrum of the photon pairs becomes a comb-like structure called a biphoton frequency comb [3–5]. Consequently, by designing the free spectral range (FSR) of cavity to be the same as the channel spacing of the WDM channels, efficient and precise extraction of photon pairs from a biphoton frequency comb to each channel of the WDM system can be achieved [6].

Intracavity generation of broadband biphotons in a thin crystal

Konstantin G. Katamadze, N. A. Borshchevskaya, I. V. Dyakonov +2 more

We propose and realize a method of high intensity generation of broadband biphotons and achieve its value up to 150 THz. The source is based on a thin BBO crystal with a thickness of 100 microns, in which spontaneous parametric down-conversion takes place. To compensate for the intensity decrease of the down-conversion caused by the small thickness of the crystal, it is placed inside the cavity of an Ar+ laser. In general, this experiment relates to the widely discussed problem of two-photon shaping in the frequency and/or angular domain.

Engineering of spectral properties of two-photon states, preliminary results

Alessio Avella, G. Brida, Maria V. Chekhova +4 more

We present an experimental implementation of spectral properties engineering on biphoton light, emitted via ultrafast type II spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), based on the shaping of the pump pulse spectrum and propagation of the emitted correlated photons through dispersive media. Spectral properties of a biphoton state are fully characterized by the two-photon spectral amplitude (TPSA). Exploiting the group velocity dispersion (GVD) induced by the passage of optical fields through dispersive media, an energy to time two dimensional Fourier transform of the TPSA is operated: this returns a technique to reconstruct TPSA by means of a temporal measurement among the delay between the laser pulse emission (trigger) and the detection times of the two correlated photons. Exploiting this kind of measurement it is possible to deeply resolve the interference pattern in the shape of TPSA. In this research we report on the conditions under which subtle structure on TPSA spectra can be deliberately engineered via modulation of the pump beam spectrum.
