Abstract

We construct the manifold of zero-energy eigenstates for a nonrelativistic spin-\textonehalf{} particle moving in a plane in an external magnetic field $B(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{x}})=\ensuremath{\Sigma}{n=0}^{N}{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{n}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{x}}\ensuremath{-}{\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{c}}}_{n})$, with ${{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{n}}$ and ${{\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{c}}}_{n}}$ arbitrary reals and ${{k}_{n}}$ positive integers. For a given $B$ the ground state is infinitely degenerate and the manifold of eigenfunctions is parametrized by a point in ${R}^{2(2{k}_{max}+1)}$. For such $B$'s we prove paramagnetism with arbitrary external potential $V(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{x}})$.

Exact Solution of a Spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Particle for a Linear Potential

Altuğ Arda

The problem of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particle moving in a linear potential field in two-dimensions is searched to obtain for nonzero energy eigenvalues and the corresponding normalized eigenfunctions. The zero-mode ($E=0$) eigenfunctions are also studied and it is seen that they are normalizable. The variation of the non-zero eigenfunctions and also eigenvalues are according to the position and potential parameter $γ$, respectively, given in the text.

Quantum Mechanical Hamiltonians with Large Ground-State Degeneracy

Choonkyu Lee, Kimyeong Lee

Nonrelativistic Hamiltonians with large, even infinite, ground-state degeneracy are studied by connecting the degeneracy to the property of a Dirac operator. We then identify a special class of Hamiltonians, for which the full space of degenerate ground states in any spatial dimension can be exhibited explicitly. The two-dimensional version of the latter coincides with the Pauli Hamiltonian, and recently-discussed models leading to higher-dimensional Landau levels are obtained as special cases of the higher-dimensional version of this Hamiltonian. But, in our framework, it is only the asymptotic behavior of the background 'potential' that matters for the ground-state degeneracy. We work out in detail the ground states of the three-dimensional model in the presence of a uniform magnetic field and such potential. In the latter case one can see degenerate stacking of all 2d Landau levels along the magnetic field axis.

Dirac equation of the electron in a magnetic field

Felix Bloch

To every solution of the time-independent Dirac equation for the electron in an arbitrary magnetic field there belongs a second solution. A characteristic twofold degeneracy, suggested by this circumstance, is shown to be excluded for the ground state at the energy $E=m{c}^{2}$,, with the further distinction of this state that the current density vanishes here at all points in space. The conditions under which the excited states exhibit such a degeneracy are discussed and in the case of its occurrence are shown to allow the construction of a particularly symmetrical pair of mutually orthogonal solutions.

The second internal degree of freedom of the Dirac particle and its optical-mechanical analogy

Nikolay Leonidovich Chuprikov

Dirac's equation with static external fields is considered as an equation of relativistic quantum theory, which describes the quantum dynamics of an electron in four-dimensional space-time. It is shown that the Dirac electron has only one intrinsic degree of freedom -- spin. The quantum ensemble of an electron with a given energy consists of two inseparable from each other subensembles of heavy and light spin-1/2 quasiparticles to have opposite (relative) intrinsic parities. In the case of electrical scalar potential nonuniform in the direction of a particle motion, these subensembles behave as analogs of the electrical and magnetic components of the plane monochromatic electromagnetic wave propagating in a dispersive medium, nonuniform in the direction of a wave motion. The role of states with negative energies and the properties of the velocity operator are explained.

Nonrelativistic spin 1/2 particle in an arbitrary non-Abelian magnetic field in two spatial dimensions

Clark, T E, Love, S T, Nowling, S R

The (group and spin space) matrix Hamiltonian describing the dynamics of a nonrelativistic spin 1/2 particle moving in a static, but spatially dependent, non-Abelian magnetic field in two spatial dimensions is shown to take the form of an anticommutator of a nilpotent operator and its hermitian conjugate. Consequently, the (group space) matrix Hamiltonians for the two different spin projections form partners of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical system. The resulting supersymmetry algebra is exploited to explicitly construct the exact zero energy ground state wavefunction(s) for the system. The remaining eigenstates and eigenvalues of the two partner Hamiltonians form positive energy degenerate pairs.

Relativistic paramagnetism

Walter T. Grandy

The equation of state is obtained for a degenerate system of non-interacting, relativistic, neutral fermions with spin 1 / 2 in a uniform magnetic field. The question of arbitrarily large fields is addressed, and previous results for the ground state are extended to finite temperatures.
