Quantum Mechanical Hamiltonians with Large Ground-State Degeneracy

Abstract

Nonrelativistic Hamiltonians with large, even infinite, ground-state degeneracy are studied by connecting the degeneracy to the property of a Dirac operator. We then identify a special class of Hamiltonians, for which the full space of degenerate ground states in any spatial dimension can be exhibited explicitly. The two-dimensional version of the latter coincides with the Pauli Hamiltonian, and recently-discussed models leading to higher-dimensional Landau levels are obtained as special cases of the higher-dimensional version of this Hamiltonian. But, in our framework, it is only the asymptotic behavior of the background 'potential' that matters for the ground-state degeneracy. We work out in detail the ground states of the three-dimensional model in the presence of a uniform magnetic field and such potential. In the latter case one can see degenerate stacking of all 2d Landau levels along the magnetic field axis.

Connection between conserved quantities and degeneracies in quantum systems

Stavros Fallieros, E. Hadjimichael

In the framework of quantum theory, we present one theorem and three corollaries regarding the direct connection between constants of motion of a physical system and degeneracies of its energy eigenvalues. It is shown that this connection emerges when there exist quantum operators which commute with the Hamiltonian, but not with each other. Further it is shown that if the commutator of these operators is a nonvanishing constant number then (a) all the eigenvalues of the system are degenerate, and (b) the degree of degeneracy is infinite. A number of examples are discussed including the parity degeneracy of the hydrogen atom and the infinite degeneracy of the Landau levels of a charged particle in a constant magnetic field.

Landau levels in lattices with long-range hopping

Hakan Atakişi, Mehmet Özgür Oktel

Landau levels (LLs) are broadened in the presence of a periodic potential, forming a barrier for accurate simulation of the fractional quantum Hall effect using cold atoms in optical lattices. Recently, it has been shown that the degeneracy of the lowest Landau level (LLL) can be restored in a tight-binding lattice if a particular form of long-range hopping is introduced [Kapit and Mueller, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 215303 (2010)]. In this paper, we investigate three problems related to such quantum Hall parent Hamiltonians in lattices. First, we show that there are infinitely many long-range hopping models in which a massively degenerate manifold is formed by lattice discretizations of wave functions in the continuum LLL. We then give a general method to construct such models, which is applicable to not only the LLL but also higher LLs. We use this method to give an analytic expression for the hoppings that restores the LLL, and an integral expression for the next LL. We also consider whether the space spanned by discretized LL wave functions is as large as the space spanned by continuum wave functions, and we find the constraints on the magnetic field for this condition to be satisfied. Finally, using these constraints and the first Chern numbers, we identify the bands of the Hofstadter butterfly that correspond to continuum LLs.

The exact ground state for a class of matrix Hamiltonian models: quantum phase transition and universality in the thermodynamic limit

Massimo Ostilli, Carlo Presilla A

By using a recently proposed probabilistic approach, we determine the exact ground state of a class of matrix Hamiltonian models characterized by the fact that in the thermodynamic limit the multiplicities of the potential values assumed by the system during its evolution are distributed according to a multinomial probability density. The class includes (i) the uniformly fully connected models, namely a collection of states all connected with equal hopping coefficients and in the presence of a potential operator with arbitrary levels and degeneracies, and (ii) the random potential systems, in which the hopping operator is generic and arbitrary potential levels are assigned randomly to the states with arbitrary probabilities. For this class of models we find a universal thermodynamic limit characterized only by the levels of the potential, rescaled by the ground-state energy of the system for zero potential, and by the corresponding degeneracies (probabilities). If the degeneracy (probability) of the lowest potential level tends to zero, the ground state of the system undergoes a quantum phase transition between a normal phase and a frozen phase with zero hopping energy. In the frozen phase the ground state condenses into the subspace spanned by the states of the system associated with the lowest potential level.

Ultracold atoms in U(2) non-Abelian gauge potentials preserving the Landau levels

Michele Burrello, Andrea Trombettoni

We study ultracold atoms subjected to U(2) non-Abelian potentials: we consider gauge potentials having, in the Abelian limit, degenerate Landau levels and we then investigate the effect of general homogeneous non-Abelian terms. The conditions under which the structure of degenerate Landau levels is preserved are classified and discussed. The typical gauge potentials preserving the Landau levels are characterized by a fictitious magnetic field and by an effective spin-orbit interaction (e.g., obtained through the rotation of two-dimensional atomic gases coupled with a tripod scheme). The single-particle energy spectrum can be analytically determined for a class of gauge potentials, whose physical implementation is discussed. The corresponding Landau levels are deformed by the non-Abelian contribution of the potential and their spin degeneracy is split. The related deformed quantum Hall states for fermions and bosons (in the presence of strong intraspecies interaction) are determined far from and at the degeneracy points of the Landau levels, where non-Abelian states appear. We present a discussion of the effect of the angular momentum, as well as results for U(3) gauge potentials.

Exact Ground States in Spin Systems with Orbital Degeneracy

Kazuhito Itoh

We present exact ground states in spin models with orbital generacy in one and higher dimensions. A method to obtain the exact ground states of the models when the Hamiltonians are composed of the products of two commutable operators is proposed. For the case of the spin-1/2 model with two-fold degeneracy some exact ground states are given, such as the Valence-Bond (VB), the magnetically ordered, and the orbitally ordered states under particular parameter regimes. We also find the models with the higher spin and degeneracy which have the new types of VB ground states in the spin and the orbital sectors.

Nonrelativistic spin 1/2 particle in an arbitrary non-Abelian magnetic field in two spatial dimensions

Clark, T E, Love, S T, Nowling, S R

The (group and spin space) matrix Hamiltonian describing the dynamics of a nonrelativistic spin 1/2 particle moving in a static, but spatially dependent, non-Abelian magnetic field in two spatial dimensions is shown to take the form of an anticommutator of a nilpotent operator and its hermitian conjugate. Consequently, the (group space) matrix Hamiltonians for the two different spin projections form partners of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical system. The resulting supersymmetry algebra is exploited to explicitly construct the exact zero energy ground state wavefunction(s) for the system. The remaining eigenstates and eigenvalues of the two partner Hamiltonians form positive energy degenerate pairs.
