Change in the shape of frequency-modulated light pulses during amplification

Abstract

An analysis is made of the propagation of a frequency-modulated light pulse in a linearly amplifying medium with an inhomogeneously broadened gain profile. It is shown that a pulse can be compressed considerably during amplification. Conditions are established under which strong distortions of the pulse shape may result in its splitting. An analysis is made of the influence of the phase self-modulation of radiation on the shape of ultrashort light pulses in oscillators and amplifiers.

Propagation of phase-modulated coherent radiation pulses in resonant media

Vladimir D Taranukhin, Sergey Y. Ten

A theoretical analysis is made of the propagation of phase-modulated laser pulses in a resonant two-level medium. It is shown that phase modulation results in the appearance of qualitatively new amplification (absorption) regimes. In one of these regimes, trains of ultrashort pulses may be generated at a high repetition frequency. An analysis is also made of the feasibility of compression of amplified pulses.

Self-modulation of radiation transmitted by an amplifying medium with a finite rate of relaxation of the gain

A. M. Samson, Е. В. Григорьева, Liudmila A. Kotomtseva

It is shown theoretically that noncoherent interaction of a light pulse with an amplifying medium characterized by a finite rate of relaxation of the gain results in damped self-modulation of the transmitted light. Formulas are obtained for the period of the resultant pulsations of the profile of the transmitted signal representing the degree of distortion of the amplified light pulse.

Change in the pulse profile and phase self-modulation in a medium of three-level atoms near a two-photon resonance

Grigorii G Grigoryan, A. O. Melikyan

Exact analytic solutions are obtained of the equations describing propagation of an adiabatic ultrashort light pulse. It is shown that phase self-modulation is the dominant mechanism of pulse deformation. A strong increase in the slope of the envelope is observed at the trailing edge of a pulse and this broadens considerably the emission spectrum.

Investigation of the amplification of ultrashort light pulses in three-level resonant systems

Leonid A Bol'shov, Nickolai N. Elkin, T. K. Kirichenko +2 more

An analysis is made of simultaneous propagation of pulses of different frequencies in many-level resonantly amplifying and absorbing media. Analytic expressions are obtained for the envelopes of fields in the case of propagation of two-frequency radiation in a three-level medium with a common lower level. Self-similar equations are obtained for the radiation propagating in an amplifying medium; in certain special cases, these equations are identical with those considered earlier.

High efficiency Raman amplification of waves with conformed profiles

Ildar A. Begishev, I. A. Kulagin, T. Usmanov

In the case of the scattering Raman amplification of light beams in a field of powerful ultrashort pulses, the back influence of the amplified radiation on the fundamental wave may be significant. Moreover, properties of the media, such as a population of atomic states, may significantly change. That leads to amplitude-phase modulation of the fundamental pulse owing to change of direction of intensity exchange in the pulse.1 As a result, the bond between the fundamental and Stokes waves becomes weaker, that results in a decrease in the frequency conversion efficiency. For spatial inhomogeneous beams this effect is different in various beam sections.

Transient processes in propagation of an ultrashort pulse in a three-level medium

Махвиладзе Тариэль Михайлович, I. G. Sinitsyn, Leonid A. Shelepin

An analysis is made of the effects associated with the propagation of an ultrashort pulse in a three-level resonance medium. It is shown that the dynamics of the changes in the pulse during its propagation differs considerably from the usual self-induced transparency effect in a two-level medium. It is predicted theoretically that there should be a propagation regime accompanied by periodic variation of the pulse shape.
