Self-modulation of radiation transmitted by an amplifying medium with a finite rate of relaxation of the gain

Abstract

It is shown theoretically that noncoherent interaction of a light pulse with an amplifying medium characterized by a finite rate of relaxation of the gain results in damped self-modulation of the transmitted light. Formulas are obtained for the period of the resultant pulsations of the profile of the transmitted signal representing the degree of distortion of the amplified light pulse.

Change in the shape of frequency-modulated light pulses during amplification

E G Lariontsev, V. N. Serkin

An analysis is made of the propagation of a frequency-modulated light pulse in a linearly amplifying medium with an inhomogeneously broadened gain profile. It is shown that a pulse can be compressed considerably during amplification. Conditions are established under which strong distortions of the pulse shape may result in its splitting. An analysis is made of the influence of the phase self-modulation of radiation on the shape of ultrashort light pulses in oscillators and amplifiers.

Formation of pulses in stimulated scattering of light in extended media. Modulation of the intensities of transmitted and backscattered radiations

N. F. Andreev, Viktor I. Bespalov, A. M. Kiselev +2 more

It is shown experimentally that stimulated backscattering modulates the amplitude of the radiation transmitted by a nonlinear medium and the modulation period is of the order of twice the transit time of light across the scattering region. The depth of modulation decreases from the beginning to the end of a pulse. The experimental results are in agreement with theoretical estimates.

Pulse shortening in a nonlinear amplifier

V. E. Brazovskii, N. V. Brazovskaya

An analysis is made of the interaction of radiation with a two-level medium at a high particle density. An explicit allowance is made in the interaction Hamiltonian for the interaction between dipoles induced by a resonance field. A semiclassical description is used to obtain a system of equations describing the propagation of a pulse in the active medium. The equations contain nonlinear terms allowing for the interaction in question. An approximate solution of the equations is obtained for the case of amplification of a weak noncoherent pulse describing pulse compression in the amplifying medium. The theory is compared with experimental results.

Theory of propagation of ultrashort light pulses in a threelevel medium

Maria V. Bogdanova, Tamara M. Il'inova

The results are given of a theoretical investigation of the interaction between two ultrashort pulses J1 and J2 of frequencies ω31 and ω21 with a three-level amplifying medium. It is assumed that the signal J1 of frequency ω31 is a steady-state π pulse and the signal J2 is weak so that its influence on the level populations can be ignored. The case when the signal J2 has a steady-state amplitude profile and an exponential gain is considered. The analysis is made ignoring the group delay effects and also allowing for the mismatch of the group velocities of the signals. The results obtained can be used in studies of the amplification of ultrashort pulses in molecular media such as organic dyes or CO2 molecules.

On the problem of ideal amplification of optical solitons

Gaston Melo Melchor, Máximo Augusto Agüero Granados, G H Corro

The new possibilities of almost ideal amplification of optical solitons during the incoherent interaction of light pulses with a resonantly amplifying medium are considered. The mechanism of two-photon amplification of optical solitons with an optimal frequency-modulation law is proposed. It is shown that the entirely ideal amplification of solitons cannot be achieved because the law of phase modulation of radiation differs from a parabolic law. The possibility of using the phase cross modulation to produce the required initial phase of amplified solitons is studied.

Distortion of self-induced-transparency solitons as a result of self-phase modulation in ion-doped fibers

Victor V. Kozlov, Evald E. Fradkin

The temporal envelope profile and the phase of a steady-state pulse propagating through a resonant medium in the presence of nonresonant nonlinearity are derived. The formation of solitonlike pulses takes place as a result of the balance of the self-phase modulation generated by nonresonant nonlinearity and the nonlinear resonant group-velocity dispersion induced by the self-induced-transparency effect in a resonant medium. Self-phase-modulation action leads to distortion of the pulse when its power and inverse duration exceed the critical values Pcr and τcr-1. We show the destructive role of self-phase modulation in the case of self-induced-transparency pulse generation in a laser with erbium-doped fiber as an intracavity coherent absorber.
