Abstract

We analyze the behavior of a thin-layer absorbing element taking into account superradiance, the local field effect and detuning. The dynamical range of optical bistability and its contrast ratio are calculated.

Bistability of optical response of an ultra thin layer consisting of two-level atoms: account of the local field

E. V. Shuval-Sergeeva, А. И. Зайцев

When describing the phenomenon of bistability of optical response of an ultra thin layer consisting of two-level atoms it is important to take into account the local field correction. The account of the correction results in the improvement of existence conditions of bistability. One more bistable region is formed starting with certain value of local field parameter. Both effects are induced by the dynamical frequency shift.

Intrinsic optical bistability in a thin layer of nonlinear optical material by means of local field effects

We show that a single thin layer (thickness much less than an optical wavelength) of nonlinear optical material can display optical bistability solely as a consequence of local field effects. Optical bistability is predicted when the phase of the complex third-order susceptibility χ(3) is nearly opposite that of the linear dielectric constant ϵ and when the incident field amplitude is adjusted so that |χ(3)||E0|2 is approximately equal to 10−3|ϵ|3.

Absorption spectrum of optically bistable systems

Lorenzo M. Narducci, Robert Gilmore, D.H. Feng +1 more

The quantum-mechanical theory of optical bistability developed in an earlier paper is generalized to calculate the absorption spectrum (gain coefficient) of an optically bistable system in the presence of a weak probe field. The behavior of the gain coefficient on the cooperative branch and the single-atom branch is analyzed in detail.

Cavityless optical bistability due to light-induced absorption in cadmium sulfide

M. Dagenais, Wayne F. Sharfin

Cavityless, whole-beam optical bistability in thin, uncoated cadmium sulfide platelets is observed at milliwatt power levels when a cw laser is tuned near a sharp extrinsic excitonic resonance in cadmium sulfide (the I2 bound exciton). Very large contrast ratios between the on and off states are measured. The detuning and temperature dependence of the bistability results are reported. Preliminary transient measurements are also discussed.
