Abstract

Radiation emitted by tunable cw CO2 and CO lasers was frequency-converted to the ultraviolet range (300 nm) in potassium vapor by parametric mixing using pump radiation exciting two-photon resonances 8S1/2, 9S1/2, and 7D3/2,5/2 in the potassium atom. Use was made of the proximity of the frequency of the converted radiation to the frequency of one-photon transitions to the levels 10P1/2,3/2 and 11P1/2,3/2.

Frequency conversion of cw CO2laser radiation fromλ=10.6μto the 276.8 nm range in a mixture of thallium and cesium vapor

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, A. K. Popov, V. P. Timofeev +1 more

Frequency conversion of cw CO 2 laser radiation to the 276.8 nm ultraviolet range was achieved in a mixture of thallium and cesium vapor by parametric mixing with radiation from a rhodamine 6G dye laser. Two-photon resonance of the pump radiation with the 6 P 1/2 –7 P 3/2 forbidden transition and the proximity of the converted radiation frequency to the frequency of the 6 D 3/2 –7 P 3/2 transition in the thallium atom were utilized. Cesium vapor was used to match the refractive indices of the interacting waves.

Conversion of the frequency of He–Ne laser radiation fromλ=1.15μto 377.6 nm in thallium vapor

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, V. A. Kiyashko, A. K. Popov +1 more

Infrared helium-neon laser radiation ( λ = 1.15 μ ) was transformed to the ultraviolet range ( λ = 377.6 nm) in thallium vapor by parametric mixing with radiation from a rhodamine 6 G dye laser ( λ = 568.6 nm). Use was made of a two-photon resonance of the pump (dye laser) radiation with the 6P 1/2 –7P 3/2 forbidden transition and of the proximity of the frequency of the radiation being temsformed to the frequency of the 7P 3/2 –7S 1/2 transition.

Conversion of tunable infrared radiation in alkali metal vapors

Sergei A. Komarov, Victor V. Krasnikov, Vladimir S Solomatin

A study was made of conversion of radiation in alkali metal vapors involving two-photon excitation of a forbidden transition by high-power pump radiation and by a weak infrared signal. Measurements showed that, in addition to tunability over a wide frequency range, such conversion was of the narrow-band type and could be used in a nonlinear infrared spectrometer.

Characteristics of resonant parametric conversion of infrared radiation in sodium vapor

Andrey V Aleksandrov, S. A. Pleshanov, Vladimir S Solomatin

A study was made of the dependences of the efficiency of resonant parametric frequency conversion in sodium vapor on the infrared radiation wavelength, vapor density, and detuning from two-photon pump resonance. It was found in this conversion system that for each infrared wave the conversion efficiency had three maxima on tuning the frequency of two-photon pumping over the region of a forbidden transition. The principal maximum was realized for accurate two-photon resonance, and the two other maxima resulted from a rise in the cubic susceptibility close to single-photon sum-frequency resonances. A quantum efficiency of 35% was achieved for a 9.26 μ infrared wave.

Generation of high-brightness coherent radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet by four-wave parametric oscillation in mercury vapor

Jeffrey Bokor A, Richard R. Freeman, R. L. Panock +1 more

Coherent radiation at several wavelengths in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) has been generated by four-wave parametric oscillation in mercury vapor. When a powerful ultraviolet pump laser of frequency omega(p) is tuned to a two-photon resonance, VUV signal photons at frequency omega(s), as well as idler photons at frequency omega(i), are generated such that omega(s) + omega(i) = 2omega(p). A frequency-doubled dye laser tuned to two-photon resonance with the 6s6d(1)D(2) level near 280.3 nm produced output at 184.9 and 143.5 nm. A tunable krypton fluoride excimer laser tuned to two-photon resonance with the 6s10s (1)S(0) level near 248.7 nm produced output at 140.1, 130.7, 130.1, 125.9, and 125.0 nm. Approximately 1-microJ, 200-W pulses were observed at 143.5 and 125.9 nm.

Resonant four-wave frequency mixing in the cw regime in sodium vapor

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, A. L. Vysotin, Im Tkhek-De +2 more

An experimental investigation was made of resonant nonlinear four-wave frequency mixing processes involving cw laser radiation in sodium vapor. It was found that, in spite of an increase in absorption, the use of resonant atomic nonlinearities can substantially improve the frequency conversion efficiency in the cw regime. The results of the measurements were compared with the theoretical conclusions. Ultraviolet radiation was generated at the sum frequency ( λ s = 268 nm) with the proportionality factor C = W s / W 1 W 2 W 3 ≈2W −2
