Abstract

The behaviour of a metal-mirrored Fabry-Perot is studied for the case of a positive intensity induced phase change of thermal origin. With increasing initial detuning three regimes with different transmission bistable loops can be distinguished. An excellent fit between theory and experiment can be obtained using a relatively simple model.

Optical bistability in an all-optical fiber nonlinear fabry-perot resonator with linear absorption

Shenping Li, K.T. Chan

An all-optical fiber nonlinear Fabry-Perot resonator is proposed. The steady-state model for describing this resonator is developed. The transmission and refection bistabilities are shown numerically. Our results show that the bistability in this system is similar to that in a normal nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon, except that the characteristics of the bistability can be changed not only by the cavity length but also by the phase shifts of the fiber loop mirrors.

Optical Bistability In Air-Spaced Fabry-Perot Etalons Caused By Thermal Expansion

W. Lukosz, P. Pirani, G. Appenzeller-Combe

We demonstrated optical bistability in air-spaced Fabry-Perot etalons caused by thermal expansion of the mirror substrates and a concomitant reduction in mirror separation. The theory of this type of bistability is presented. Experimental results for metal mirror coat-ings of gold or aluminium on glass and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) at the He-Ne laser wavelength λ=632.8 nm are given.

Analysis of optical bistability in a nonlinear distributively coupled resonator

Serge Dubovitsky, William H. Steier

A nonlinear distributively coupled resonator (NDCR) used as a bistable element is studied. The resonator is an integrated optics implementation of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot resonator with a variable reflectivity mirror. Under certain conditions, the intensity-dependent reflectivity and tuning of the resonator contribute constructively and enhance nonlinear properties of the device. Numerical methods are used to optimize NDCR design parameters and show that the critical intensity required for onset of bistability is reduced by 30% relative to a comparable regular Fabry-Perot. Similarly, the minimum required index change is reduced by 10%.>

Optical bistability by phase switching

Yoshio Nishiyama

It is demonstrated theoretically in the semiclassical treatment, that bilateral incidence of monochromatic optical waves onto a Fabry-Perot cavity including resonant absorbers leads to bistable output on variation of the relative phase difference between initial phases of two incident beams, as well as of the intensities.

Bistable Behaviour of a Detuned Fabry-Perot Etalon with a Gaussian input Spatial Profile under Self-focusing and Defocusing Conditions

J. V. Moloney

Bistable operation of an initially detuned Fabry-Perot etalon with a spatially varying transverse input is studied numerically. Non-linear medium propagation effects are accounted for explicitly. Fast Fourier transforms are used to treat beam diffraction, providing a computationally efficient numerical algorithm. Steady state bistable loops are computed for a Fresnel number close to unity, under both self-focusing and defocusing conditions. Beam diffraction causes earlier switch-on in the defocusing case.

Optical bistability induced by mirror absorption: measurement of absorption coefficients at the sub-ppm level

Kyungwon An, Bryndol Sones, Christopher M. Fang-Yen +2 more

We have observed optical bistability caused by absorption-induced thermal expansion of mirrors forming a Fabry-Perot interferometer. From the resulting anomalous transmission line shapes, absorption coefficients of the mirror coatings as low as 0.2parts in 10(6) (ppm) have been successfully measured.
