Abstract

It is demonstrated theoretically in the semiclassical treatment, that bilateral incidence of monochromatic optical waves onto a Fabry-Perot cavity including resonant absorbers leads to bistable output on variation of the relative phase difference between initial phases of two incident beams, as well as of the intensities.

Input-output characteristics of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot system

Yoshio Nishiyama, Susumu Kurita

We study a Fabry-Perot system with a homogeneously broadened medium of active two-level atoms when monochromatic waves are incident on it from both sides. It is found that the ratio of output intensities at both sides depends on the relative phase between the bilateral incident waves and there are the cases when the output intensities are equal even if the bilateral inputs are different from each other. It is shown that completely absorbed states or emission states are attained for the light of special modes with proper intensity and for suitable population.

Output characteristics of a stratified medium in the case of bilateral incidence of monochromatic waves

Yoshio Nishiyama

The output characteristics of a stratified medium in the case of bilateral incidence of monochromatic light waves have been investigated. If the waves are incident in such a way as a single mode is standing in the medium, an asymmetry occurs in output intensities of both sides, even if the incident intensities are equal. For a medium with some values of the refractive and attenuation index, there can be a state in which both incident waves are completely absorbed. This is discussed in detail for the case of a Fabry–Perot cavity containing a linear optical medium.

Optical Bistability in a Two-State Dissipative Medium Inside a Fabry-Perot Cavity

In this work a theoretical model treating the optical bistability in a two state dissipative atomic medium inside a Fabry-Perot cavity is presented. The model is based on a semiclassical point of view to explain the field-matter interaction. The atoms of the medium are described by the "quantum polarization equation of motion" while the field is described by the "classical Maxwell's field equations".Applying the boundary conditions to the fields inside the Fabry-Perot cavity, the occurrence of optical bistability is deduced between the incident field intensity and both the intracavity and transmitted field intensities. Also the effect of building standing and nonstanding waves inside the cavity on bistability is discussed.
