Abstract

The refraction is theoretically considered of ultra-short pulses at interface of two dielectrics that contains a thin film of nonlinear material featured by the negative refractive index in a certain frequency band. For the models of meta-material composed of nanoparticles and magnetic nanocircuits (split-ring resonators), the equations are obtained suitable for describing the coherent responses: photon echo, optical nutations, and harmonic generation. The numerical simulation demonstrates the emergence of photon echo in inhomogeneous system of meta-atoms. It is supposed that the reported methods are applicable for investigation of thin meta-material films.

Resonant interaction of light with a thin film of three-level atoms

S. O. Elyutin, Andrei I. Maimistov

Refraction of a double-frequency optical pulse at the interface between two linear dielectrics containing a thin film of resonant atoms is considered. The dynamics of the system is treated based on the model of three-level atoms with the V -type energy diagram. Refraction of short and long (compared with the Rabi oscillation period) pulses is analyzed with allowance for local-field effects. In both cases, the shape of the pulse corresponding to one carrier wave frequency is shown to depend on the energy of the pulse with the other carrier wave frequency. In particular, both the frequency and the depth of the amplitude modulation arising in the refracted pulse are changed.

Short optical pulse refraction by a thin film of atoms at two-photon resonance

S. O. Elyutin, Andrei I. Maimistov

A refraction of short pulses by a thin film of atoms at two- photon resonance is numerically considered with the process of third harmonic generation involved in analysis. It is shown that a light pulse, being refracted by a tin film of resonance atoms, decays into subpulses, which number is determined by the energy penetrated in the film. The process depends on the angle of incidence. The variation of the resonance detuning allows compensating Stark effect and creating the preferable conditions for light pulse transmission. The effect of local field is similar in its action to the Stark effect, but its contribution to the frequency shift could be significant only in the media with greater concentration of the resonance atoms.

Nonlinear index of refraction and photon echo formation in superthin doped film

Irina V. Gadomskaya, Sergey G. Moiseev

A method of integrodifferential equations associated with the optical Bloch equations is used to consider the boundary-value problem of nonlinear reflection (refraction) of the laser beams on the superthin film doped by the two-level atoms. An allowance is made for the phase memory effects exhibited by two-level atoms in response to pulses of fields resolved in space and time. A generalized Lorentz-Lorenz formula is derived for a nonlinear complex refractive index of an doped film in the region of an absorption band when this index depends nonlinearly and nonstationarly on the field inside the film. We derived generalized synchronism conditions to investigate the angular distribution of reflected and refracted primary photon echo signals.

Fast electromagnetic response of a thin film of resonant atoms with permanent dipole

Jean-Guy Caputo, Elena V. Kazantseva, Andrei I. Maimistov

We consider the propagation of extremely short pulses through a dielectric thin film containing resonant atoms (two-level atoms) with permanent dipole. Assuming that the film width is less than the field wavelength, we can solve the wave equation and reduce the problem to a system of generalized Bloch equations describing the resonant atoms. We compute the stationary solutions for a constant irradiation of the film. Superimposing a small amplitude linear wave we calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients. From these, one can then deduce the different parameters of the model. We believe that this technique could be used in experiments to obtain the medium atomic and relaxation parameters.

Dynamic features of interaction between a sequence of ultrashort laser pulses and planar, thin-film microcavities

Vladimir A. Goryachev, Sergey M. Zakharov

A theory of coherent interaction between a sequence of ultrashort laser pulses and planar, thin-film microcavities in the form of Fabry-Perot resonators containing resonating atoms has been developed. The dynamics of transmission of single laser pulses has been analyzed numerically. Analytic solutions of the problem of four-wave mixing of optical fields separated in time have been obtained in the small-area approximation. The dynamic efficiency of conversion of incident waves to the coherent response field (photon echo) generated in a microcavity can be higher than in the case of a bulk resonant structure. Specific features of photon echo generation in a microcavity for arbitrary “areas” of laser pump pulses are discussed.
