Abstract

We report an experimental demonstration of multi-pathway all-optical switching and routing via efficient wavelength conversion in hot rubidium vapour. We apply a coupling field and a control field to drive both 87Rb and 85Rb isotope atoms into either the double-Λ or triple-Λ configuration when a probe field is scanned across the D1 line of the rubidium atom. We find that this driving scheme facilitates the coherent generation of seven wave-mixing signals with different frequencies and polarizations based on four-wave mixing and six-wave mixing interactions. Also, each generated signal can be switched on and off simply by modulating the control field in frequency to optimize or suppress one specific wave-mixing interaction.

Dual-channel all-optical wavelength conversion switching by four-wave mixing

We report an experimental demonstration of dual-channel all-optical wavelength conversion switching in hot Rb vapor. In a four-level atomic system, a coupling field and a pump field interact with both (87)Rb and (85)Rb isotopes simultaneously and facilitate the generation of two nonlinear signals when the probe field is applied to the corresponding transition. Each nonlinear signal is switched on and off separately by the pump field at different frequencies based on four-wave mixing and isotope shifts.

Suppression of four-wave mixing in hot rubidium vapor using ladder scheme Raman absorption

Nikunj Prajapati, G. Romanov, Irina V. Novikova

We experimentally investigate the effectiveness of four-wave mixing suppression in a double-Λ interaction scheme by introducing an additional ladder-type two-photon Raman absorption resonance for one of the optical fields. We propose several possible interaction configurations involving either one or two isotopes of Rb and experimentally demonstrate the possibility of efficient four-wave mixing suppression in both electromagnetically induced transparency and far-detuned Raman cases.

Observation of multi-Raman gain resonances in rubidium vapor

Jun Liu, Dong Wei, Jinwen Wang +4 more

We present an experimental study of multi-Raman gain resonances in a hot rubidium vapor. The experiment is performed based on a high-efficiency four-wave mixing process due to the Raman-driven coherence in a double-Λ configuration. The Raman gain resonance for 85 Rb atoms under a bias magnetic field is shown to be split into five or six peaks, depending on the orientation of the magnetic field. The formed multi-Raman gain resonances have potential applications in measurement of magnetic fields and generation of multi-frequency correlated twin beams.

Highly efficient four-wave mixing induced by quantum constructive interference in rubidium vapour

Gang Wang, Yan Xue, Cui-Li Cui +2 more

We demonstrate efficient four-wave mixing with an intensity conversion efficiency of nearly 100% in theory without considering the Doppler-broadening effect in a four-level double-Λ system of hot 87 Rb gas. The corresponding experimental value of about 73% was reported in our earlier work under the same conditions. This dramatic efficiency is critically dependent on the constructive interference between two four-wave mixing processes relevant to the internally generated four-wave mixing signal.

The efficient wavelength conversion of images has many potential applications in optical communication, sensing, imaging, and quantum information fields. In this work, we report on a demonstration of an image transfer between light of wavelength 780 nm and light of wavelength 1530 nm by performing two sequential four-wave-mixing processes in two different hot atomic rubidium vapor cells. Furthermore, we confirm experimentally the persistence of coherence of the input light during this sequential process. Our results may be useful to the research fields mentioned above.

Efficient frequency conversion induced by quantum constructive interference

Gang Wang, Yan Xue, Jin‐Hui Wu +4 more

We demonstrate in experiment an efficient cw four-wave mixing scheme with maximal intensity conversion efficiency up to 73% in a double-Λ system of hot rubidium atoms. Relevant theoretical analysis shows that this high conversion efficiency benefits greatly from the constructive interference between two four-wave mixing channels, characterized by two different space-dependent phases.
