Abstract

Propagation dynamics of twin laser pulses through a cold four-level inverted-Y atomic medium is investigated theoretically via switching on and off an external magnetic field under the application of a strong driving field.By numerically solving the coupled Bloch-Maxwell equations for atom and field simultaneously on a spacetime grid, our spatio-temporal results clearly show that dynamic control of twin-pulse propagation and magneto-optic dual switching operation are possible in such an inverted-Y system. The proposed scheme may be used for the design of magneto-optic switching and magneto-optic storage devices.

Propagation of magnetically controllable lasers and magneto-optic dual switching using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

J.-H. Li, Rong Yu, Y. Wu

We study coherent laser-induced optical behaviors in weak twin-light propagation through strained diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers via switching on and off an external magnetic field. By numerically solving the coupled Bloch-Maxwell equations for NV center and field simultaneously in space and time, we address dynamic control of pulse propagation and magneto-optic dual switching in such a laser-driven NV center system. The proposed scheme may have applications in the design of magneto-optic switching and magneto-optic storage devices.

Subluminal and superluminal light pulse propagation under external magnetic field in a vee-type three-level atomic medium

Thai Doan Thanh, Nguyễn Tuấn Anh, Nguyen Thi Thu Hien +4 more

In this work, we investigate subluminal and superluminal light propagation in a vee-type three-level atomic medium under an external magnetic field. The dispersion and absorption behaviors are studied for the cases of absence and presence of a magnetic field. It is found that under an electromagnetically induced transparency condition, the light pulse can be switched between subluminal and superluminal propagation by ON-OFF switching of the magnetic field. Finally, the transient response of the medium is discussed, which shows that the considered scheme has potential applications in magneto-optic switching devices. Dynamic of two-channel pulse propagation in a tripod-type degenerate atomic medium

Phuong Le Thi Minh, Thanh Thai Doan, Hoang Minh Dong

We numerically investigate two-channel pulse propagation dynamics in a degenerate tripod-type four-level atomic medium under the combined influence of an external magnetic field and a relative phase. The results show that an external magnetic field is used as a “knob” to switch between transparent and absorptive regimes of the probe pulse by the on/off state of the magnetic field within suitable frequency and phase domains. By tuning the magnitude of the magnetic field, the transparency spectrum can be reversibly transformed between single- and double-window structures, enabling stable pulse propagation in a single- or dual-channel. In addition, the relative phase strongly modifies the probe absorption profile and provides an efficient means to control pulse propagation dynamics. These findings suggest promising applications in pulse propagation, multi-channel switching, and optical storage for communication systems.

Spatio-temporal properties of pulse propagation in a graphene quantum system

Chao Xiao

Abstract In this paper we have theoretically studied the spatial-temporal evolution of electromagnetic light propagation through a four-level graphene quantum system by using density matrix method and perturbation theory. The four-level graphene quantum medium interacted by an elliptical polarized coupling and a weak probe lights, respectively. We present the analytical solution for solving the Maxwell–Bloch equations for graphene and electromagnetic field in space and time domains. Then, we have analyzed the dynamic control of pulse propagation and optical dual switching in such a laser-driven quantum system. Our theoretical findings show that by adjusting the optical parameters such as elliptical angle i.e. phase difference between right-and-left circularly polarized, one can easily control the absorption spectrum and pulse propagation of the probe light in graphene medium. Our results may have potential applications in designing the new quantum devices for usage in quantum information processing.

Controllable twin laser pulse propagation and dual-optical switching in a four-level quantum dot nanostructure

Yihong Qi, Fengxue Zhou, Jie Yang +2 more

We investigate control of the propagation dynamics of weak twin laser pulses and propose a dual-optical switching scheme in four-level semiconductor quantum dots of diamond configuration. It is shown that the propagation dynamics of the two probe pulses depend not only on the intensity of corresponding control field in each cascade transition path but also on the relative intensities of the two control fields. This property provides the probability for realizing all-optical switching in the quantum dots. Possible all-optical switching operations for any one of the probe fields or both probe fields simultaneously with the same or adverse switching status can be realized by modulating the corresponding control fields. In addition, the relative phase of the laser fields also influences the switching operation and can be used to realize optical switching, which is also discussed in the paper.

Controllable light group velocity in a degenerate two-level medium under the assistance of an external magnetic field

Dong Hoang Minh, Thai Doan Thanh, Nguyen Thi Thu Hien +3 more

In this work, we proposed a simple model for control of subluminal and superluminal light propagation via an external magnetic field in a lambda configuration degenerate two-level atomic medium. We show that the absorption-dispersion properties and group index under the influence of the strength of coupling laser and external magnetic fields are controlled. By changing the direction and magnitude of the magnetic field, the medium switches from transparency with normal dispersion to enhanced absorption with anomalous dispersion at the line center, corresponding with the transfer from slow light to fast light. This work may provide for the application realization of magneto-optic switches and storage devices in quantum information processing.
