Abstract

We investigate control of the propagation dynamics of weak twin laser pulses and propose a dual-optical switching scheme in four-level semiconductor quantum dots of diamond configuration. It is shown that the propagation dynamics of the two probe pulses depend not only on the intensity of corresponding control field in each cascade transition path but also on the relative intensities of the two control fields. This property provides the probability for realizing all-optical switching in the quantum dots. Possible all-optical switching operations for any one of the probe fields or both probe fields simultaneously with the same or adverse switching status can be realized by modulating the corresponding control fields. In addition, the relative phase of the laser fields also influences the switching operation and can be used to realize optical switching, which is also discussed in the paper.

Pulse propagation and optically controllable switch in coupled semiconductor-double-quantum-dot nanostructures

Hamid Reza Hamedi

The problem of pulse propagation is theoretically investigated through a coupled semiconductor-double-quantum-dot (SDQD) nanostructure. Solving the coupled Maxwell–Bloch equations for the SDQD and field simultaneously, the dynamic control of pulse propagation through the medium is numerically explored. It is found that when all the control fields are in exact resonance with their corresponding transitions, a weak Gaussian-shaped probe pulse is transmitted through the medium nearly without any significant absorption and losses so that it can preserve its shape for quite a long propagation distance. In contrast, when one of the control fields is not in resonance with its corresponding transition, the probe pulse will be absorbed by the QD medium after a short distance. Then we consider the probe pulses with higher intensities. It is realized that an intense probe pulse experiences remarkable absorption and broadening during propagation. Finally, we demonstrate that this SDQD system can be employed as an optically controllable switch for the wave propagation to transit from an absorbing phase to a perfect transparency for the probe field. The required time for such switch is also estimated through realistic values.

Phase Control of Transient Optical Properties of Double Coupled Quantum-Dot Nanostructure via Gaussian Laser Beams

We theoretically analyze the transient properties of a probe field absorption and dispersion in a coupled semiconductor double-quantum-dot nanostructure. We show that in the presence of the Gaussian laser beams, absorption and dispersion of the probe field can be dramatically influenced by the relative phase between applied fields and intensity of the Gaussian laser beams. Transient and steady-state behaviors of the probe field absorption and dispersion are discussed to estimate the required switching time. The estimated range is between 5–8 ps for subluminal to superluminal light propagation .

Propagation of twin light pulses under magneto-optical switching operations in a four-level inverted-Y atomic medium

Propagation dynamics of twin laser pulses through a cold four-level inverted-Y atomic medium is investigated theoretically via switching on and off an external magnetic field under the application of a strong driving field.By numerically solving the coupled Bloch-Maxwell equations for atom and field simultaneously on a spacetime grid, our spatio-temporal results clearly show that dynamic control of twin-pulse propagation and magneto-optic dual switching operation are possible in such an inverted-Y system. The proposed scheme may be used for the design of magneto-optic switching and magneto-optic storage devices.

Enhanced Cross-Phase Modulation via Phase Control in a Quantum dot Nanostructure

Xiangying Hao, Anshou Zheng, Ying Wang +1 more

A four-level quantum dot (QD) nanostructure interacting with four fields (two weak near-infrared (NIR) pulses and two control fields) forms the well-known double-cascade configuration. We investigate the cross-phase modulation (XPM) between the two NIR pulses. The results show, in such a closed-loop scheme, that the XPM can be greatly enhanced, while the linear absorption and two-photon absorption (gain) can be efficiently depressed by tuning the relative phase among the applied fields. This protocol may have potential applications in NIR all-optical switch design and quantum information processing with the solid-state materials.

In this paper, we investigated the transient electron population and the transient behaviour of the dispersion, absorption and refractive property of weak probe light in a four-level InGaN/GaN quantum dot nanostructure. In order to achieve the wave functions and their corresponding energy levels of the mentioned quantum dot nanostructure, the Schrödinger and Poisson equations is solved selfconsistently for carriers (here electron) in quantum dot.Our findings show that the properties of transient processes can be dramatically affected by parameters such as intensity, detuning and relative phase of applied fields. Our proposed scheme provides a realistic model for transient control of refraction index properties in a quantum dot nanostructure. These results may have potential applications in high speed optical switch for quantum information technologies.

Propagation of a laser pulse and electro-optic switch in a GaAs/AlGaAs quadruple-coupled quantum dot molecule nanostructure

Jalil Shiri

Abstract Based on a GaAs/AlGaAs quadruple-coupled quantum dot heterostructure, an optical switch for controlling superluminal and subluminal light propagation is suggested. The transient and steady state behaviour of the absorption and dispersion of a probe pulse laser field through a quadruple quantum dot molecule are studied. We show that the group velocity of a light pulse can be controlled from superluminal to subluminal, or vice versa, by controlling the tunnelling rates between the quantum dots. The required switching time is calculated and we find it to be about 8 ps. We also investigated a method for the all-optical switching of probe field absorption from a large amount to nearly zero just by applying an incoherent pumping field. We estimated the required switching time for this case to be between 3 and 14 ps.
