Abstract

A four-level quantum dot (QD) nanostructure interacting with four fields (two weak near-infrared (NIR) pulses and two control fields) forms the well-known double-cascade configuration. We investigate the cross-phase modulation (XPM) between the two NIR pulses. The results show, in such a closed-loop scheme, that the XPM can be greatly enhanced, while the linear absorption and two-photon absorption (gain) can be efficiently depressed by tuning the relative phase among the applied fields. This protocol may have potential applications in NIR all-optical switch design and quantum information processing with the solid-state materials.

Steady-state absorption–dispersion properties and four-wave mixing process in a quantum dot nanostructure

Xiangying Hao, Jing Wu, Ying Wang

With the presence of the signal pulse, a quantum dot (QD) four-level structure interacting with four fields forms a double-cascade configuration. The linear optical properties for amplification, absorption, and dispersion of two weak near-infrared (NIR) lights in this scheme are investigated. It shows that the amplification, transparency, normal and anomalous dispersion of the probe and signal fields, i.e., the two NIR waves, can be achieved by adjusting the relative phase of the applied lasers, the probe detuning, and the two pump Rabi energies appropriately, while when the signal pulse is removed, the nonlinear optical phenomenon four-wave mixing (FWM) originating from quantum interference is demonstrated. A highly efficient FWM process with a NIR mixing field generated can be realized in this system. Such investigation in a semiconductor QD system with flexible design and widely adjustable parameters may provide new possibilities for realizing the efficient generation and gain of NIR waves and manipulating light propagation between subluminal and superluminal in the solid-state materials.

Phase control of cross-phase modulation with electromagnetically induced transparency

Hui Sun, Yueping Niu, Shiqi Jin +1 more

We investigate a four-level double-Λ atomic scheme interacting with four laser fields, a weak probe field, a weak signal field and two driven fields, in a closed-loop configuration. We study the Kerr nonlinearity associated with cross-phase modulation based on electromagnetically induced transparency. Our results show, in this closed-loop system, that the strength of cross-phase modulation and two-photon absorption are dependent critically on the relative phase between the excitation paths. By choosing the parameters appropriately, large cross-phase modulation can be achieved within a wide transparency window, while two-photon absorption is cancelled completely. The strength of cross-phase modulation can be enhanced much more by decreasing the intensities of two driven fields.

Large Cross-Phase Modulations at the Few-Photon Level

Ziyu Liu, Yi‐Hsin Chen, Yen-Chun Chen +5 more

We demonstrate an efficient cross-phase modulation (XPM) based on a closed-loop double-Λ system. The property of the double-Λ medium can be controlled by changing the phases of the applied optical fields. This phase-dependent XPM scheme can achieve large phase modulations at low-light intensities without requiring cavities or tightly focusing laser beams. With this scheme, we observe a π-level phase shift with two pulses, both consisting of eight photons in cold rubidium atoms. Such a novel scheme provides a simple route to generate strong interactions between photons and may have potential applications in all-optical quantum signal processing.

Controllable twin laser pulse propagation and dual-optical switching in a four-level quantum dot nanostructure

Yihong Qi, Fengxue Zhou, Jie Yang +2 more

We investigate control of the propagation dynamics of weak twin laser pulses and propose a dual-optical switching scheme in four-level semiconductor quantum dots of diamond configuration. It is shown that the propagation dynamics of the two probe pulses depend not only on the intensity of corresponding control field in each cascade transition path but also on the relative intensities of the two control fields. This property provides the probability for realizing all-optical switching in the quantum dots. Possible all-optical switching operations for any one of the probe fields or both probe fields simultaneously with the same or adverse switching status can be realized by modulating the corresponding control fields. In addition, the relative phase of the laser fields also influences the switching operation and can be used to realize optical switching, which is also discussed in the paper.
