Optical bistability by photorefractive two-wave mixing

Jianquan Yao, J. Wang

It is known that two-wave coupling in photorefractive crystal may result in an intensity-dependent phase shift as well as energy transfer between the two waves without phase crosstalk. In a sense, this kind of phase shift is similar to the intensity-dependent refractive-index effects in Kerr media. Consequently, optical bistability can be established in an optical cavity with a photorefractive crystal. We formulate the model and get the expected bistable transmission with numerical simulations. Several cases, including that of the codirectional coupling and the contradirectional coupling, are considered. The effects of the photorefractive crystal’s distribution absorption and the spatial phase shift between the index grating and the light interference pattern in the crystal on the nonlinear transmission characteristics have also been studied. It is interesting to note that the output of the pumping wave is dependent on the cavity intensity and thus shows bistable behavior with respect to the cavity input as well.

Optical bistability by two-wave mixing in photorefractive crystals

Edward D. Baraban, Hong-Zhun Zhang, Robert W. Boyd

Optical bistability in photorefractive strontium barium niobate in a two-wave mixing configuration with feedback is reported. We observe bistability both under conditions for which its existence was recently predicted by Zozulya et al. [ Opt. Commun.72, 381 ( 1989)] and under more general conditions.

Optical gain oscillation by photorefractive two-wave mixing

宁继平 Ning Jiping, Zhongkang Wu

Two-wave coupling in photorefractive media leads to intensity-dependent phase shift as well as energy transfer between the two waves without phase interdisturbance with this mechanism, the theoretical and experimental study on the optical gain oscillation has been done by using an optical ring cavity containing photorefractive media. The experimental results agree with the theoretical analysis.

Photorefractive Saturable Absorptive and Dispersive Optical Bistability

Shimon Weiss, B. Fischer

It is shown that photorefractive wave-mixing gives saturable gain, saturable absorption and Kerr-like nonlinear phase retardation. An analogy between photorefractive two-beam coupling and two-level atom system is then drawn. We investigate optical bistability in a ring cavity, utilizing these phenomena, and compare our results with classical absorptive and dispersive optical bistability.

Bistability and hysteresis have been observed in a photorefractive passive phase conjugate mirror. A threshold basis for the effect is presented and the results of an experimental demonstration of the device are given.

Multistability by Two Counterpropagating Waves in Photorefractive Media

Wang Jian, Yao Jianquan

It has been shown that two-wave coupling in photorefractive media may result in energy transference between the two waves without phase crosstalk. The model might be used to show optical bistability with the feedback of one of the output beams into the input of the other beam.
