Abstract

The transient dynamics of a two-level atom in an amplitude-modulated laser light has been examined. The remarkable effect of constant intensity of the scattered light, in spite of the amplitude modulation of the incident light, is discovered. The effect of dissipation on the system is examined and a connection with known results in the steady-state domain is made.

Spectrum of resonance fluorescence from a two-level atom interacting with 100% amplitude-modulated intense radiation

Surya P. Tewari, M. Krishna Kumari

We give analytical results for the fluorescence spectrum of a two-level atom interacting with fully amplitude-modulated field at resonance. The results are valid for unequal longitudinal and transverse relaxation rates and follow the experimentally observed pattern. The intensity-dependent changes in the peak widths and peak heights are presented. Novel transient effects are predicted.

Optical Response of a Randomly Modulated Two-Level Atom

Terumi Chikama, Kazuhiko Saikawa, Ryogo Kubo

In order to investigate the effect of perturbation caused by the interaction of a two-level atom with its environment on the coherency of light scattered by the atom when it is irradiated by an intense radiation, Mollow's theory is generalized to include a random modulation of the resonance frequency as well as fluctuations of the incident field. Expressions for the power spectrum, the total intensity, the coherent scattering intensity and the broad Rayleigh scattering intensity are derived. Some general aspects of the problem are discussed.

Resonance fluorescence spectrum of intense amplitude modulated laser light

Barbara Blind, P. Fontana, P Thomann

The spectrum of light scattered by a two-level atom in an intense laser beam with amplitude modulated light is calculated. The spectrum is obtained by evaluating the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation function of the dipole moment. The modulation introduces new components in both the coherent and incoherent parts of the frequency distribution. The total intensity when plotted as a function of the average Rabi frequency exhibits parametric resonances.

Analysis of transient effects of two-level atom in laser light

Smail B. Bougouffa, S. Al‐Awfi

We are concerned with an analytic separation approach of the optical Bloch equations in the case of the two-level atom interacting with a classical light. The conditions that permit a complete separation of these equations are extracted in a natural manner and the exact solutions are obtained. A theoretical comparison with Torrey method is given. In this context, we find that the transient regime, valid from the instant of the application of the laser on atom, is significant for the evolution of forces and the dynamics before the steady-state regime will be reached. The case of Eu3 + ion moving in plane-light wave and standing-wave is treated with some details. The implications of the results for operating atoms and ions using laser light are discussed.

Resonance fluorescence of a two-level atom driven by phase-modulated laser light

Maciej Janowicz

The spectral distribution of light scattered by a two-level atom in a laser beam with phase modulation has been calculated. The spectrum has been obtained via numerical solution of the optical Bloch equations using the algorithm of Wilkens and Rza\ifmmode \mbox{\c{}}\else \c{}\fi{}\ifmmode \dot{z}\else \.{z}\fi{}ewski [Phys. Rev. A 40, 3164 (1989)]. The modulation produces additional sidebands in both coherent and incoherent parts of the spectrum; the location of the added components depends on the modulation depth. In the case of two-frequency phase modulation with incommensurate frequencies, wild, ``chaotic'' behavior of the spectrum has been observed, similar to the case of bichromatic amplitude modulation. The intensity distribution is practically insensitive to the chosen constant value of the phase of modulation.

Response of a two-level system to a narrow-band light excitation completely modulated in amplitude

S. Feneuille, Marie-Gabrielle Schweighofer, Guy Oliver

By studying the response of a two-level system to a narrow-band light excitation completely modulated in amplitude, a new manifestation of the dynamical Stark effect is predicted. It can be observed not only through the modulation rate or the phaseshift of the scattered light but also through the mean total intensity. Thus its experimental observation should be particularly easy.
