Spectrum of resonance fluorescence from a two-level atom interacting with 100% amplitude-modulated intense radiation

Abstract

We give analytical results for the fluorescence spectrum of a two-level atom interacting with fully amplitude-modulated field at resonance. The results are valid for unequal longitudinal and transverse relaxation rates and follow the experimentally observed pattern. The intensity-dependent changes in the peak widths and peak heights are presented. Novel transient effects are predicted.

The ladder of triplets in the resonance fluorescence spectrum of a two-level atom

M Krishna Kumari, S.P. Tewari

The fluorescence spectra of a two level atom interacting with amplitude modulated intense fields are presented. The spectra are multipeaked and can be in general described as a superposition of triplets. The incoherent spectra for the fully amplitude modulated field and those under conditions of parametric resonance are predicted to have a width that depends on the modulation intensity. This feature is different from the known intensity-independent widths of the peaks in the Mollow spectrum. The transient spectra for an atom placed in the dressed state of a partially amplitude modulated field are found to show variation in the peak height. In some cases, one of the peaks of each triplet is suppressed while in another situation, all the peaks lying to one side of the spectral centre are absent.

Spectrum of radiation from two-level atoms under intense bichromatic excitation

G. S. Agarwal, Yifu Zhu, Daniel J. Gauthier +1 more

We develop a theoretical framework for calculating the spectrum of resonance fluorescence emitted by two-level atoms that are excited by a strong bichromatic field. The dressed states for the two-level system that is interacting with a fully modulated field are identified, and the spectral features are interpreted in terms of transitions among these dressed states.

Resonance fluorescence with modulated excitation

Stephen H. Chakmakjian, Karl W. Koch, Carlos R. Stroud +1 more

We report our results on measurement of the total fluorescent power radiated by two-level atoms excited by a 100% amplitude modulated or bichromatic laser field. For the case of single-frequency excitation, it is well known that the total fluorescent power monotonically saturates as the intensity of the field is increased. This occurs because the inversion of the atoms approaches zero at high field strengths. In contrast, when the field is bichromatic the total fluorescent power displays resonant peaks as the strength of the driving field is increased. This occurs because there is enhanced absorption when the modulation frequency coincides with the Rabi freqeuncy or one of its subharmonics.

The effects of transverse relaxation and optical pumping on the resonance fluorescence

TAN WEI-HAN, Weiping Zhang

Although the resonance fluorescence spectrum of coherent light scattering from a two-level atom has been discussed in many papers, the effects of longitudinal, transverse relaxation and optical pumping have not yet been considered simultaneously in the motion equations. By solving the optical Bloch equations including the longitudinal relaxation time T 1 , transverse relaxation time T 2 and optical pumping parameter Δ 0 , in the case T 2 /T 1 <<1, we obtain the spectrum with dip in the central peak besides the familiar spectrum of three peaks. In addition, we find that the parameter Δ 0 and detuning Δω have influence on the symmetry, height and width of the spectrum of the three peaks.

Resonance spectrum of a two-level system including self-interaction effects

Renhong Lui, Weihan Tan

In consideration of the interaction of both the driving field and the atom's radiation field itself, the resonance spectrum irradiated by a two-level system in a cavity is calculated. The spectrum thus obtained shows some new features in comparison with that of a two-level system in free space. The five-peak structure in the resonance fluorescence spectrum is shown for the first time, and very narrow central peak width for a good cavity also is observed.

AC Stark effect and fluorescence in modulated laser beams. II. Two-photon stepwise excitations

Ragini Saxena, G. S. Agarwal

For pt.I see ibid., vol.12, no.12, p.1939 (1979). The modulated fluorescence in an optical double resonance experiment, i.e. when an atom interacts with two intense monochromatic laser beams each of which is weakly modulated in amplitude at frequency Omega , is studied in detail. The modulation rate corresponding to the steady-state population of the highest atomic level exhibits resonant structures at the modulation frequencies Omega =0, +or- alpha 0 , +or-2 alpha 0 due to the dynamical Stark splitting of the various energy levels; alpha 0 being related to the Rabi frequencies alpha 1 and alpha 2 associated with the two lasers and the two atomic transitions, by alpha 0 2 = mod alpha 1 mod 2 + mod alpha 2 mod 2 . The peak at Omega =+or- alpha 0 is the most intense and exhibits splitting when the applied fields are detuned from exact resonance with the respective atomic frequencies. Resonances are observed in the modulation rate of the intermediate-level population at the modulation frequencies Omega =0, +or-2 alpha 0 . In the presence of detunings of the applied fields, additional resonant structures occur at Omega =+or- alpha 0 which increase in magnitude with higher detunings and split. Explicit expressions for the positions, widths and weights of these resonant components are obtained analytically for intense, resonant fields. Numerical results for general values of the laser field strengths and the detunings are given.
