Dynamics of transmission of ultrashort light pulses by thin-film cavity structures

Abstract

An analysis is made of the interaction of ultrashort light pulses with thin-film cavity structures filled with two-level resonant atoms. A study is reported of the dynamics of transmission of such pulses when transitions take place between bistable states. The superradiance delay time is found to depend on the amplitude of a soliton-like input pulse and on the photon lifetime in the cavity.

Reflection and transmission of ultrashort light pulses through a thin resonant medium: Local-field effects

M. G. Benedict, Victor A Malyshev, Evgenii Dmitrievich Trifonov +1 more

We investigate the problem of resonant reflection and transmission of an ultrashort light pulse passing through a thin layer consisting of two-level atoms. The local-field correction that leads to an inversion-dependent resonance frequency generates a new mechanism of nonlinear transparency. When the excitation frequency is somewhat larger than the original resonant frequency, then the transmission of the layer exhibits a transient bistable behavior on the time scale of superradiation, which can be much shorter than the relaxation times. This type of bistability is essentially different from the ordinary stationary intrinsic bistability investigated earlier by other authors.

Mirrorless Optical Bistability of Thin Layer with Resonant Two-Level Atoms in Ultrashort Light Pulse Field

Viktor A. Malyshev, Evgenii Dmitrievich Trifonov, А. И. Зайцев +1 more

We investigate the problem of resonant re flection and transmission of an ultrashort light pulse passing through a medium consisting of two-level atoms. We show that for a thin layer it is important to take into account the difference between the external macroscopic field and the field acting on the individual atoms within the medium. The local field correction leads to an inversion dependent resonant frequency. In thin layers this generates a new mechanism of nonlinear transparency induced by the dynamical frequency shift. When the excitation frequency is larger than the original resonant frequency, then the transmission of the layer exhibits bistable behavior.

Peculiarities in Transmission (Reflection) of Ultrashort Resonant Laser Pulses by a Thin Semiconductor Film in the Conditions of Exciton and Biexciton Excitation

A. V. Corovai, А.Г. МАНГИР, P. I. Khadzhi

Abstract We have studied the nonstationary transmission of two ultrashort laser pulses incident on a thin film. The radiation frequency of one of these pulses is in resonance with the two-photon transition from the ground state of the crystal to the biexciton state, while the other pulse coherently mixes the exciton and biexciton states, leading to strong renormalization of the energy spectrum of the crystal. We have obtained a system of nonlinear equations describing the time evolution of the exciton and biexciton amplitudes and the fields of three pulses transmitted through the film. We have analyzed the effect of amplitudes and widths of incident pulsed and of the time delay between them on the peculiarities of film transmission of these pulses. We have predicted the effect of a substantial time delay in the generation of the pulse transmitted through the film relative to the incident pulse, which is in resonance with the exciton–biexciton transition frequency. The possibility of generation of a precursor, viz., a pulse transmitted through the film sooner than the peak of the incident pulse reaches the film, as well as possibility of generation of a reflected pulse in the absence of the incident pulse, has been proven.

Dynamic features of interaction between a sequence of ultrashort laser pulses and planar, thin-film microcavities

Vladimir A. Goryachev, Sergey M. Zakharov

A theory of coherent interaction between a sequence of ultrashort laser pulses and planar, thin-film microcavities in the form of Fabry-Perot resonators containing resonating atoms has been developed. The dynamics of transmission of single laser pulses has been analyzed numerically. Analytic solutions of the problem of four-wave mixing of optical fields separated in time have been obtained in the small-area approximation. The dynamic efficiency of conversion of incident waves to the coherent response field (photon echo) generated in a microcavity can be higher than in the case of a bulk resonant structure. Specific features of photon echo generation in a microcavity for arbitrary “areas” of laser pump pulses are discussed.

Delay effects in a system formed by a bistable thin film and a mirror

Natalia A. Loiko, Yu. A. Logvin, A. M. Samson

A theoretical investigation is made of the dynamics of the interaction of light with a bistable system formed by a thin film and a feedback mirror. The dependence of the dynamics on the ratio of the relaxation time of a two-level medium to the delay associated with the transmission of light from the film to the mirror and back again is determined. The reasons and conditions for the appearance of regular pulsations and of more complex dynamics are found.

Interaction of an ultrashort light pulse with thin semiconductor films in the exciton part of the spectrum

P. I. Khadzhi, S L Gaivan

The problem of transmission of an ultrashort laser pulse by a thin semiconductor film in the exciton part of the spectrum is solved for low excitation levels. Analytic solutions of the equations describing the dynamics of the exciton—photon interaction are obtained for homogeneous thin films and for films with an inhomogeneously broadened exciton system.
