Abstract

We investigate the problem of resonant reflection and transmission of an ultrashort light pulse passing through a thin layer consisting of two-level atoms. The local-field correction that leads to an inversion-dependent resonance frequency generates a new mechanism of nonlinear transparency. When the excitation frequency is somewhat larger than the original resonant frequency, then the transmission of the layer exhibits a transient bistable behavior on the time scale of superradiation, which can be much shorter than the relaxation times. This type of bistability is essentially different from the ordinary stationary intrinsic bistability investigated earlier by other authors.

Mirrorless Optical Bistability of Thin Layer with Resonant Two-Level Atoms in Ultrashort Light Pulse Field

We investigate the problem of resonant re flection and transmission of an ultrashort light pulse passing through a medium consisting of two-level atoms. We show that for a thin layer it is important to take into account the difference between the external macroscopic field and the field acting on the individual atoms within the medium. The local field correction leads to an inversion dependent resonant frequency. In thin layers this generates a new mechanism of nonlinear transparency induced by the dynamical frequency shift. When the excitation frequency is larger than the original resonant frequency, then the transmission of the layer exhibits bistable behavior.

Characteristics of reflection of an ultrashort light pulse from a thin layer of a nonlinear medium

V. A. Yurevich

A numerical analysis is used to formulate the conditions for the manifestation of bistable reflection of a quasimonochromatic light pulse from a thin layer of a resonant medium with nonlinear refraction. The duration of the light pulse is assumed to be less than the phase relaxation time of the nonlinear material. The nonlinearity is due to the existence, in the energy structure of the active atoms, of transitions adjacent to resonances.

Dynamics of transmission of ultrashort light pulses by thin-film cavity structures

Vladimir A. Goryachev, Sergey M. Zakharov

An analysis is made of the interaction of ultrashort light pulses with thin-film cavity structures filled with two-level resonant atoms. A study is reported of the dynamics of transmission of such pulses when transitions take place between bistable states. The superradiance delay time is found to depend on the amplitude of a soliton-like input pulse and on the photon lifetime in the cavity.

Nonlinear transmission of ultrashort laser pulses by a thin semiconductor film under conditions of a two-photon two-pulse excitation of biexcitons

D. A. Markov, P. I. Khadzhi, A. V. Corovai

Specific features of the nonstationary transmission of two pulses exciting biexcitons from the ground state in a thin semiconductor film are studied. It is shown that one of the incident rectangular pulses is totally reflected from the film, whereas the second pulse passes through it as through an absolutely transparent medium. Criteria for appearance of a stationary bistable transmission are determined.

Reflection and transmission on the boundary of a resonant medium

M. G. Benedict, A. M. Ermolaev, В. А. Малышев +2 more

This chapter investigates the transmission and reflection properties of a resonant nonlinear medium when the incoming wave is a short pulse, generally shorter than the relaxation times of the atoms in the medium. It shows that if the lifetime of the macroscopic polarization is long enough, and neither the incident field nor the relaxation processes reduce it, then the field originating from this polarization gives rise to effects which may be called cooperative reflection and transmission. The chapter considers the resonant reflection from the surfaces of the inverted medium of waves propagating inside the medium. It uses this effect to explain the synchronization of the counter-propagating pulses in super-radiance which has been observed in KCl:O2– [FSS84a]. There are several proposals to explain why this synchronization of super-radiance appears in solids.

Transient phenomena in a thin film of a three-level atom model with ultrashort pulses

S L Gaivan, P. I. Khadzhi

A theoretical investigation is reported of the coherent nonlinear response of excitons and biexcitons in a thin semiconductor film subjected to resonant laser radiation. It is shown that saturation of an exciton transition results in an abrupt qualitative change in the nature of film transition from the regime of total reflection of the incident pulse at low pump amplitudes to oscillatory reflection at high amplitudes. A new area theorem is derived for ultrashort pulses: it establishes a correspondence between the areas of the incident, transmitted and reflected pulses. Anomalous transmission and reflection is predicted for large values of the nonlinear parameter. The equations of the state, describing bistable behavior of the amplitudes of the fields of the transmitted and reflected radiation, are derived for quasi-cw operation.
