Abstract

A theoretical investigation is made of the dynamics of the interaction of light with a bistable system formed by a thin film and a feedback mirror. The dependence of the dynamics on the ratio of the relaxation time of a two-level medium to the delay associated with the transmission of light from the film to the mirror and back again is determined. The reasons and conditions for the appearance of regular pulsations and of more complex dynamics are found.

Dynamics of transmission of ultrashort light pulses by thin-film cavity structures

Vladimir A. Goryachev, Sergey M. Zakharov

An analysis is made of the interaction of ultrashort light pulses with thin-film cavity structures filled with two-level resonant atoms. A study is reported of the dynamics of transmission of such pulses when transitions take place between bistable states. The superradiance delay time is found to depend on the amplitude of a soliton-like input pulse and on the photon lifetime in the cavity.

Instabilities and chaos in a bistable thin layer of two-level atoms

Yu. A. Logvin, A. M. Samson, Sergei I. Turovets

A theoretical analysis is made of the interaction between a bistable thin layer and an electromagnetic wave of modulated amplitude. It is shown that complex (including random) regimes appear in the reflection and transmission of light by a thin layer. The model equations are presented in a form correpsonding to the motion of a classical nonlinear oscillator with parametric and external force excitation. The behavior of the system is analyzed in terms of the dynamics of this oscillator.

Interplay between two kinds of hopf instabilities in thin-film systems

Pavel V. Paulau, Natalia A. Loiko

This study investigates a structure including two such films irradiated from one side. Such a bilayer system can be considered as the basic element of a multilayer structure determining the main features of the all structure on the one hand and as individual element transforming the light on the other hand. Superradiation of the film both in the direction of incident beam and in the back direction provides the delay feedback between separate films. This study reveals two mechanisms of Hopf instabilities in the described thin-film system. The first mechanism is connected with the existence of multistable steady-state characteristic due to the superradiance and local field correction, while the second is relevant to the excitement of Rabi oscillations. Arising pulsations are sustained by the delay feedback existing between two films. The threshold value of the feedback delay can be minimized by the proper choice of parameters and even reduced to zero in the case of Rabi oscillations excitement.

Symmetry breaking in optical dynamics of two bistable thin films

Ihar Babushkin, Yu. A. Logvin, Natalia A. Loiko

A theoretical investigation is reported of the interaction of light with a system of two films which contain two-level centres and whose thickness is less than the incident radiation wavelength. It is shown that when light of the same intensity is incident from both sides of the films, symmetry-breaking bifurcation is possible, i.e. the transmitted fields are different for the opposite directions. The relationship between symmetry-breaking bifurcation and optical bistability is determined. If the distance between the films represents an odd number of the optical half-wavelengths symmetry breaking occurs at a lower value of the parameter representing the interaction nonlinearity than that corresponding to the onset of bistability. The opposite is true when an even number of half-wavelengths can be fitted between the films. The supression of symmetry-breaking bifurcation is illustrated for various intensities of the incident optical field.

Instability Leading to Periodic and Chaotic Self-Pulsations in a Bistable Optical Cavity

Kensuke S. Ikeda, O. Akimoto

It is shown that the transmitted light from a bistable optical cavity exhibits instability leading to periodic and chaotic self-pulsations, when the relaxation time of the medium is much longer than the delay time of the feedback of light. This instability, which is different from the delay-induced one predicted recently by the authors and observed by Gibbs and co-workers, is interpreted as a self-induced Rabi nutation of the electric field vector.

Light Dynamics of Bistable Element Chain

Yu. A. Logvin, A. M. Samson

The light dynamics of bistable element chain is theoretically considered within the scope of the plane wave approximation. It is supposed that bistable elements are arranged In line and coupled by the light beams (see fig.). As a model is chosen the bistable thin film of two-level atoms [1,2] subjecting to the relation (1) where e i and e t - the amplitudes of incident and transmitted field, C - the cooperative parameter of the film [3].
