Abstract

We report the study of absorption and fluorescence in neodymium doped silica fibers with excitation pulses much shorter than the fluorescence lifetime. Fluorescence and absorption saturation are observed for pump powers well below the damage threshold of the fiber. The saturation process is described using the density matrix method for the light absorption and the normal mode formalism for the propagation. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theory.

Simultaneous measurements of lifetime, gain and emission cross section in a neodymium-doped fiber

Bernard Dussardier, Gérard Monnom, Eric Maurice +2 more

A method for measuring the gain and the emission cross section of the four-level neodymium system in doped waveguides is presented. The method is based on a temporal analysis of the fluorescence decay occurring when the pump is switched off, after establishing a steady-state with high levels of absorbed power. For the case of doped fibers, results obtained using this method are compared with the usual low signal amplification technique, using a launched signal in the fiber, and the agreement is good. It is shown that the technique allows a rapid, simple method of determining low signal gain.>

E-band neodymium-doped fiber amplifier: model and application

Charles D. Boley, Jay W. Dawson, Leily Kiani +1 more

To analyze recent experiments with a neodymium-doped fiber amplifier operating in the E-band of wavelengths (1350-1450 nm) and embedded in fused silica, we develop a time-dependent model consisting of rate equations for the aggregate ion populations and the radiation intensities along the amplifier axis. Both copropagating and counterpropagating intensities, including amplified spontaneous emission, are incorporated. The wavelength-dependent cross section for excited state absorption is inferred from auxiliary measurements. Steady-state solutions are obtained over a range of seed wavelengths and powers. The resulting gain curves agree with experiment at low to intermediate powers (less than ∼1 mW). With a proposed addition to the system loss, the agreement extends to saturation (∼100 mW).

Successive excited-state absorption through a multistep process in highly Er^3+-doped fiber pumped by a 148-μm laser diode

Shin Arahira, Kenji Watanabe, Keisuke Shinozaki +1 more

The fluorescence spectra ranging from 400 to 1000 nm were investigated on highly Er(3+) -doped fiber pumped by a 1.48-microm laser diode. A strong green emission was observed. An investigation of the fluorescence intensity dependence on pump power revealed that the green emission is attributed to successive excited-state absorption through a three-step process and also that saturation of the atomic levels that contribute to the emission occurs.

Observation of slow light propagation in saturable erbium doped fiber via transient fluorescence at the fiber side

Anna Shlyagina, Marcos Plata Sánchez, Serguei I. Stepanov

Erbium-doper fiber (EDF) is a flexible and promising model medium for investigation of the slow/fast light propagation in saturable optical materials. The experiments are usually performed in the spectral range 1480-1570 nm of the absorption/gain of Er3+ ions using the input power of a sub-mW scale. Conventional experimental configuration allows one to observe, however, the input and the output pulse profiles only. We report an original nondestructive technique for observation of a spatial propagation of the pulses via observation of the transient fluorescence excited by the propagating light-pulses at the fiber side, from which we are able to reconstruct how does the fractional delay and the amplitude of the propagating pulses change along the fiber. Results of a numerical simulation of the nonlinear pulse propagation performed for a saturable two-level medium in low contrast approximation proved to be in a reasonable agreement with the experimental observations.

Investigation of Absorption Dynamics From the Excited State 5I7 of Holmium Ions in Optical Silica-Based Fibers

Serafima A. Filatova, Alisa E. Fale, Vladimir A. Kamynin +7 more

Absorption of continuous wave and pulsed resonance radiation at a wavelength of 1.6 µm at the upward transition from the excited state$^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{7}$of holmium (Ho3+) ions in silica-based fiber has been studied. Analysis of experimental and simulated data of the absorption dynamics for the case of pulsed pumping of Ho-doped fiber allowed us to determine the previously unknown value of the absorption cross-section at the transition$^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{7}{ \to }^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{5}$as 1.9×10–21cm2. It allowed us to correctly simulate the relaxation process of the$^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{7}$level population averaged over the fiber length in the presence of stationary resonance radiation. The effect of pulsed resonance radiation with different peak powers (10 and 100 W) and pulse duration of 1μs on the stationary active medium was considered. The mutual influence of the Ho-doped fiber characteristics and the resonance radiation at a wavelength of 1.6 μm was found. This allows the resonance radiation to be used as an attenuator or modulator of laser radiation at the$^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{8}{ \to }^{5}{\mathrm{I}}_{7}$transition in Ho-doped fibers.

Excited-state absorption in erbium-doped silica fiber with simultaneous excitation at 977 and 1531 nm

Yuri O. Barmenkov, Alexander V. Kir’yanov, ANA DINORA GUZMAN CHAVEZ +2 more

We report a study of the excited-state absorption (ESA) in erbium-doped silica fiber (EDF) pumped at 977 nm, when the fiber is simultaneously excited by signal radiation at 1531 nm. We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that ESA efficiency at 977 nm gets strongly enhanced only in the presence of signal power. Experimentally, this conclusion is supported through the detection of upconversion emission, a “fingerprint” of the ESA process, and through the measurements of the EDF nonlinear transmission coefficient for the pump wavelength, which is sensitive to the ESA value. It is shown that the experimental data are precisely modeled with an advanced five-level Er3+ model developed for the EDF.
