Quantum dynamics of a spin-1 condensate in a double-well potential

Abstract

We study quantum dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate of spin-1 atoms inside a double-well potential. Under the single spatial mode approximation for condensate wave functions localized within each of the two wells, we examine quantum entanglement and pseudo-spin-squeezing properties in both the Rabi and Josephson regimes. Quantum fluctuations is found to be more stable leading to robust multipartite entanglement in the lower end of the Josephson regime, or the mean field self-trapped region. Substantial multipartite entanglement is witnessed not only due to pseudo-spin-squeezing by the axis-twisting interaction but also from redistribution of mode-entangled atoms between the wells by the tunneling coupling.

Tunneling of condensate magnetization in a double-well potential

Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu, Mei Zhang, Li You

We study quantum dynamical properties of a spin-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. Adopting a mean field theory and single spatial mode approximation, we characterize our model system as two coupled spins. For certain initial states, we find full magnetization oscillations between wells not accompanied by mass (or atom numbers) exchange. We identify dynamic regimes of collective spin variables arising from nonlinear self-interactions that are different from the usual Josephson oscillations. We also discuss magnetization beats and incomplete oscillations of collective spin variables other than the magnetization. Our study points to an alternative approach to observe coherent tunnelling of a condensate through a (spatial) potential barrier.

Quantum squeezing and entanglement in a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate with time-dependent Josephson-like coupling

Seok Jin Choi, N. P. Bigelow

Dynamical evolution of quantum mechanical squeezing and entanglement in a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate (TBEC) with an adiabatic, time-varying Raman coupling is studied by finding analytical expressions for these quantities. In particular, we study the entanglement between the atoms in the condensate as well as that between the two modes. The nature of the enhanced quantum correlations in TBEC is clarified by considering squeezing and entanglement both with and without the nonlinear interaction turned on; it is found that entanglement approaching maximal value can be achieved with the nonlinear interactions present. Somewhat counterintuitively, greater squeezing is found in the absence of nonlinear interactions. This is due to the collapses and revivals of the TBEC quantum state induced by the nonlinear interactions. In addition, results involving the self-trapping phase state of TBEC indicate potential for creating a dynamically stable, macroscopic entangled quantum state which is relatively robust with respect to atom number fluctuations.

Nonlinear dynamics of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu, Mei Zhang, Li You

We examine the nonlinear dynamical behavior of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. Considering a condensate with large number of atoms, such that it can be described using the mean field theory, we separate the spinor dynamics from the spatial dynamics under the single-mode approximation. We limit ourselves to certain initial conditions under which the spatial mode is frozen so that we can focus on the spinor dynamics only. Identifying collective spin variables of our system, we derive the corresponding nonlinear equations of motion for them. Employing standard stability analysis, we find and characterize fixed points of the system. For a wide range of physical parameters such as tunneling strength and non-linear interactions, as well as for various initial preparations of the system, we identify qualitatively different dynamical regimes possible in the system. In particular, complete and incomplete oscillations of spin variables between quantum wells are found. We also show that by bringing some fixed points close to each other in the phase space of the system, it is possible to induce amplitude modulation to those otherwise regular tunneling oscillations.

Coherent tunneling of collective excitation of Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

Yao-Jun Ying, Wang, Haoyu, Zhang, Ming +1 more

The Josephson effect can be observed in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential, which is attributed to the tunneling of bosons between two wells. We propose a multi-mode theory to investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a one-dimensional condensate in a double-well potential. We show that the system can be described by two independent two-mode models. The Josephson oscillation and the self-trapping of local collective excitations are predicted analytically and confirmed by numerical simulation.

Tunneling, self-trapping, and manipulation of higher modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well

Jérémie Gillet, Miguel Ángel García-March, Thomas Busch +1 more

We consider an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a symmetric one-dimensional double-well potential in the four-mode approximation and show that the semiclassical dynamics of the two ground-state modes can be strongly influenced by a macroscopic occupation of the two excited modes. In particular, the addition of the two excited modes already unveils features related to the effect of dissipation on the condensate. In general, we find a rich dynamics that includes Rabi oscillations, a mixed Josephson-Rabi regime, self-trapping, chaotic behavior, and the existence of fixed points. We investigate how the dynamics of the atoms in the excited modes can be manipulated by controlling the atomic populations of the ground states.

Josephson dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

Dan-Wei Zhang, Libin Fu, Z. D. Wang +1 more

We investigate the quantum dynamics of an experimentally realized spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. The spin-orbit coupling can significantly enhance the atomic interwell tunneling. We find the coexistence of internal and external Josephson effects in the system, which are moreover inherently coupled in a complicated form even in the absence of interatomic interactions. Moreover, we show that the spin-dependent tunneling between two wells can induce a net atomic spin current referred as spin Josephson effects. Such spin Josephson effects can be observable under realistic conditions.
