Abstract

We study quantum dynamical properties of a spin-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. Adopting a mean field theory and single spatial mode approximation, we characterize our model system as two coupled spins. For certain initial states, we find full magnetization oscillations between wells not accompanied by mass (or atom numbers) exchange. We identify dynamic regimes of collective spin variables arising from nonlinear self-interactions that are different from the usual Josephson oscillations. We also discuss magnetization beats and incomplete oscillations of collective spin variables other than the magnetization. Our study points to an alternative approach to observe coherent tunnelling of a condensate through a (spatial) potential barrier.

Nonlinear dynamics of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu, Mei Zhang, Li You

We examine the nonlinear dynamical behavior of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. Considering a condensate with large number of atoms, such that it can be described using the mean field theory, we separate the spinor dynamics from the spatial dynamics under the single-mode approximation. We limit ourselves to certain initial conditions under which the spatial mode is frozen so that we can focus on the spinor dynamics only. Identifying collective spin variables of our system, we derive the corresponding nonlinear equations of motion for them. Employing standard stability analysis, we find and characterize fixed points of the system. For a wide range of physical parameters such as tunneling strength and non-linear interactions, as well as for various initial preparations of the system, we identify qualitatively different dynamical regimes possible in the system. In particular, complete and incomplete oscillations of spin variables between quantum wells are found. We also show that by bringing some fixed points close to each other in the phase space of the system, it is possible to induce amplitude modulation to those otherwise regular tunneling oscillations.

Quantum dynamics of a spin-1 condensate in a double-well potential

Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu, Wenxian Zhang, Li You

We study quantum dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate of spin-1 atoms inside a double-well potential. Under the single spatial mode approximation for condensate wave functions localized within each of the two wells, we examine quantum entanglement and pseudo-spin-squeezing properties in both the Rabi and Josephson regimes. Quantum fluctuations is found to be more stable leading to robust multipartite entanglement in the lower end of the Josephson regime, or the mean field self-trapped region. Substantial multipartite entanglement is witnessed not only due to pseudo-spin-squeezing by the axis-twisting interaction but also from redistribution of mode-entangled atoms between the wells by the tunneling coupling.

Coherent tunneling of collective excitation of Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

Yao-Jun Ying, Wang, Haoyu, Zhang, Ming +1 more

The Josephson effect can be observed in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential, which is attributed to the tunneling of bosons between two wells. We propose a multi-mode theory to investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a one-dimensional condensate in a double-well potential. We show that the system can be described by two independent two-mode models. The Josephson oscillation and the self-trapping of local collective excitations are predicted analytically and confirmed by numerical simulation.

Macroscopic quantum tunnelling of magnetization in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu, Li You

We investigate macroscopic quantum tunneling of magnetization in a a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double-well potential.Using the mean field theory applicable for large condensates, and employing the single spatial mode approximation we derive dynamical equations for magnetization, independent from density mode, for certain initial conditions. We show that they can be reduced to standard Josephson junction dynamics equations under certain conditions.

Nonlinear dynamical properties of susceptibility of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate with dipole-dipole interaction in a double-well potential

Xiao-Fei Zang, Li Ju-Ping, Lei Tan +1 more

Based on mean-field theory and single spatial mode approximation,we study the nonlinear dynamical properties of the susceptibility of total spin F=1 Bose-Einstein condensate with dipole-dipole interaction in a double-well potential. For certain initial states,we find that the susceptibility oscillation appears when λA+2λd=0. When λA+2λd≠0, the dynamical behavior of the system shows both oscillation and self-trapping of susceptibility.

Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Single Double Well Potential

Rudolf Gati

The subject of this work is the experimental implementation of a single bosonic Josephson junction and the discussion of the performed investigations. To generate this new kind of Josephson junction a 87-Rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate is split in a double well potential into two matter wave packets, which are coupled coherently to each other via quantum mechanical tunneling of atoms through the barrier. The state of the system can be described by two dynamical variables, the population imbalance of the two wells and their phase difference. The investigation of the dynamical response of the Josephson junction shows, that two dynamical regimes can be identified, the plasma oscillation regime, where atoms tunnel back and forth between the wells, and the self trapping regime, where no tunneling is found. Furthermore, the investigation at finite temperature reveals, that the relative phase in steady state is not locked to zero but fluctuates according to its temperature and the tunneling coupling. By measuring the fluctuations and calculating the tunneling coupling it is possible to deduce the temperature of the atomic cloud. With this a new method for thermometry is realized, which also works in a regime, where the standard methods can not be applied.
