Abstract

We investigate the quantum dynamics of an experimentally realized spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. The spin-orbit coupling can significantly enhance the atomic interwell tunneling. We find the coexistence of internal and external Josephson effects in the system, which are moreover inherently coupled in a complicated form even in the absence of interatomic interactions. Moreover, we show that the spin-dependent tunneling between two wells can induce a net atomic spin current referred as spin Josephson effects. Such spin Josephson effects can be observable under realistic conditions.

Energy Band and Josephson Dynamics of Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose–Einstein Condensates*

Xin Zhang, Zi-Fa Yu, Ju-Kui Xue

Abstract We theoretically investigate the energy band structure and Josephson dynamics of a spin-orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. We study the energy band structure and the corresponding tunneling dynamics of the system by properly adjusting the SO coupling, Raman coupling, Zeeman field and atomic interactions. The coupled effects of SO coupling, Raman coupling, Zeeman field and atomic interactions lead to the appearance of complex energy band structure including the loop structure. Particularly, the emergence of the loop structure in energy band also depends on SO coupling, Raman coupling, Zeeman field and atomic interactions. Correspondingly, the Josephson dynamics of the system are strongly related to the energy band structure. Especially, the emergence of the loop structure results in complex tunneling dynamics, including suppression-revival transitions and self-trapping of atoms transfer between two spin states and two wells. This engineering provides a possible means for studying energy level and corresponding dynamics of two-species SO coupled BECs.

Josephson physics of spin-orbit-coupled elongated Bose-Einstein condensates

Miguel Ángel García-March, G. Mazzarella, Luca Dell’Anna +3 more

We consider an ultracold bosonic binary mixture confined in a quasi-one-dimensional double-well trap. The two bosonic components are assumed to be two hyperfine internal states of the same atom. We suppose that these two components are spin-orbit coupled to each other. We employ the two-mode approximation starting from two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations and derive a system of ordinary differential equations governing the temporal evolution of the interwell population imbalance of each component and of the polarization, which is the imbalance of the total populations of the two species. From this set of equations we disentangle the different macroscopic quantum tunneling and self-trapping scenarios occurring for both population imbalances and the polarization in terms of the interplay between the interatomic interactions and the other relevant energies in the problem, like the spin-orbit coupling or the conventional tunneling term. We find a rich dynamics in all three variables and discuss the experimental feasibility of such a system.

Spin Josephson effects of spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in a non-Hermitian double well

Jia Tang, Hu Zhou, Zhao‐Yun Zeng +5 more

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the spin and tunneling dynamics of a spin–orbit-coupled noninteracting Bose–Einstein condensate in a periodically driven non-Hermitian double-well potential. Under high-frequency driving, we obtain the effective time-averaged Hamiltonian by using the standard time-averaging method, and analytically calculate the Floquet quasienergies, revealing that the parity-time ( )-breaking phase transition appears even for arbitrarily small non-Hermitian parameters when the spin–orbit coupling strength takes half-integer value, irrespective of the values of other parameters used. When the system is -symmetric with balanced gain and loss, we find numerically and analytically that in the broken -symmetric regions, there will exist the net spin current together with a vanishing atomic current, if we drop the contribution of the exponential growth of the norm to the current behaviors. When the system is non- -symmetric, though the quasienergies are partial complex, a stable net spin current can be generated by controlling the periodic driving field, which is accompanied by a spatial localization of the condensate in the well with gain. The results deepen the understanding of non-Hermitian physics and could be useful for engineering a variety of devices for spintronics.

Spin Josephson Vortices in Two Tunnel-Coupled Spinor Bose Gases

T. W. A. Montgomery, Weibin Li, T. M. Fromhold

We study topological excitations in spin-one Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in an elongated double-well optical potential. This system hosts a new topological defect, the spin Josephson vortex (SJV), which forms due to the competition between the interwell atomic tunneling and short-range ferromagnetic two-body interaction. We identify the spin structure and formation dynamics of the SJV and determine the phase diagram of the system. By exploiting the intrinsic stability of the SJV, we propose a dynamical method to create SJVs under realistic experimental conditions.

Tunneling of condensate magnetization in a double-well potential

Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu, Mei Zhang, Li You

We study quantum dynamical properties of a spin-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. Adopting a mean field theory and single spatial mode approximation, we characterize our model system as two coupled spins. For certain initial states, we find full magnetization oscillations between wells not accompanied by mass (or atom numbers) exchange. We identify dynamic regimes of collective spin variables arising from nonlinear self-interactions that are different from the usual Josephson oscillations. We also discuss magnetization beats and incomplete oscillations of collective spin variables other than the magnetization. Our study points to an alternative approach to observe coherent tunnelling of a condensate through a (spatial) potential barrier.

Coherent tunneling of collective excitation of Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

Yao-Jun Ying, Wang, Haoyu, Zhang, Ming +1 more

The Josephson effect can be observed in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential, which is attributed to the tunneling of bosons between two wells. We propose a multi-mode theory to investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a one-dimensional condensate in a double-well potential. We show that the system can be described by two independent two-mode models. The Josephson oscillation and the self-trapping of local collective excitations are predicted analytically and confirmed by numerical simulation.
