Abstract

Observation of transient effects in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is reported in ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{85}$ cooled in a magneto-optical trap. The transmission of a weak probe beam in resonance with the ${5S}_{1/2}(F=3)$ to ${5P}_{3/2}(F=3)$ hyperfine transition increased transiently when a relatively strong coupling field in resonance with the ${5S}_{1/2}(F=2)$ to ${5P}_{3/2}(F=3)$ hyperfine transition was switched on rapidly using a Pockels cell. The probe transient showed an initial Rabi half-cycle overshoot before settling down to steady-state EIT. The results agreed well with computations using a three-state model of the \ensuremath{\Lambda} system. The computations also suggest that transient gain should be observed with coupling field power only four times larger than that presently available to us.

Transient studies of transparency and gain in laser-cooled rubidium lambda systems

S.R. de Echaniz, Andrew D. Greentree, Alan V. Durrant +3 more

Summary form only given. Many studies have been made of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and probe gain under steady-state conditions. We have carried out experimental studies of transient effects in rubidium lambda systems in the non-adiabatic regime where the coupling field is rapidly switched on using a Pockels cell in a time that is short compared with transient time scales. Our preliminary work has confirmed predictions that the steady-state EIT is approached through damped oscillations characterised by the coupling field Rabi frequency /spl Omega//sub c/ and the spontaneous decay rate /spl Gamma/. We report results of our recent investigations into the effects of strong coupling fields conducted in several different lambda schemes in the rubidium 5S/sub 1/2/-5P/sub 3/2/ hyperfine levels in a magnetooptical trap. We also studied the effects of the initial conditions of population and optical coherence, probe absorption on uncoupled Zeeman transitions, and incoherent pumping.

Resonant and off-resonant transients in electromagnetically induced transparency: Turn-on and turn-off dynamics

Andrew D. Greentree, T. B. Smith, S.R. de Echaniz +4 more

This paper presents a wide-ranging theoretical and experimental study of nonadiabatic transient phenomena in a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ electromagnetically induced transparency system when a strong coupling field is rapidly switched on or off. The theoretical treatment uses a Laplace transform approach to solve the time-dependent density matrix equation. The experiments are carried out in a ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ magneto-optical trap. The results show transient probe gain in parameter regions not previously studied, and provide insight into the transition dynamics between bare and dressed states.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in cold85Rb atoms trapped in the ground hyperfineF= 2 state

V B Tiwari, S Singh, H S Rawat +2 more

We report electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in cold 85 Rb atoms, trapped in the lower hyperfine level F = 2, of the ground state 5 2 S 1/2 (Tiwari V B et al 2008 Phys. Rev. A 78 063421). Two steady-state Λ-type systems of hyperfine energy levels are investigated using probe transitions into the levels F ′ = 2 and F ′ = 3 of the excited state 5 2 P 3/2 in the presence of coupling transitions F = 3 → F ′ = 2 and F = 3 → F ′ = 3, respectively. The effects of uncoupled magnetic sublevel transitions and coupling field's Rabi frequency on the EIT signal from these systems are studied using a simple theoretical model.

Studies on Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in $\Lambda$-systems in $^{87}Rb$ atom

C. S. Mishra, A. Chakraborty, Ruchi Srivastava +4 more

We have investigated electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in two different $\Lambda$-systems in $^{87}Rb$ atom in $D_{2}$ line transitions. It is found that observed EIT signals in both the systems (A) ($|5^{2}S_{1/2} F=1\rangle \rightarrow |5^{2}P_{3/2} F'=1\rangle \leftarrow |5^{2}S_{1/2} F=2\rangle$) and (B) ($|5^{2}S_{1/2} F=1\rangle \rightarrow |5^{2}P_{3/2} F'=2\rangle \leftarrow |5^{2}S_{1/2} F=2\rangle$) have different strength and lineshape which are dependent on coupling beam power. For a given coupling beam power, the EIT signal with $\Lambda$-system (B) has more symmetric lineshape and greater strength than that obtained with system (A). The experimental results are in qualitative agreement with the results of a six-level theoretical model. We have further investigated EIT in both these $\Lambda$-systems in presence of applied longitudinal magnetic field and observed that separation between Zeeman split-EIT peaks increased linearly with the strength of the magnetic field. At a fixed value of applied magnetic field, the strength of Zeeman split-EIT peaks in both the $\Lambda$-systems increases with increase in coupling beam power. In presence of magnetic field and at higher coupling power, the observed EIT signals (central peaks) have higher slope than that of signals obtained in absence of magnetic field. These studies establish that $\Lambda$-system (B) is more useful than $\Lambda$-system (A) from applications point of view.

Non-adiabatic resonant transient response in electromagnetically induced transparency of hot rubidium atoms with a buffer gas background

Priyabrata Seth, Nawaz Sarif Mallick, Sankar De +1 more

We report the experimental observation of transient dynamics in the weak probe coherence under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in hot Rb atoms with a buffer gas. By modulating the control beam in a non-adiabatic fashion, we have examined the corresponding changes in probe transparency. Upon switching the control beam on, the system evolves through multiple dynamical processes before reaching steady-state transparency. We have decoded each of those dynamical processes region by region and notably observed two-photon damped Rabi oscillations, Raman gain, and direct dark state rotation during this evolution. For the theoretical insight, we have numerically solved the time-dependent density matrix elements for a Λ system, incorporating the buffer gas effects phenomenologically into these equations. Our findings provide a detailed understanding of transient and steady-state dynamics in EIT systems, highlighting the interplay between coherent and incoherent processes and the role of the buffer gas in modulating the evolution. The buffer medium extended relevant timescales, thus enhancing the coherence and stability of the atomic system, which are key factors for practical implementations in precision metrology and quantum optics.

Electromagnetically induced transparency, absorption, and microwave-field sensing in a Rb vapor cell with a three-color all-infrared laser system

Nithiwadee Thaicharoen, Kaitlin Moore, David Alexander Anderson +3 more

A comprehensive study of three-photon electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and absorption (EIA) on the rubidium cascade $5{S}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5{P}_{3/2}$ (laser wavelength 780 nm), $5{P}_{3/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5{D}_{5/2}$ (776 nm), and $5{D}_{5/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}28{F}_{7/2}$ (1260 nm) is performed. The 780-nm probe and 776-nm dressing beams are counteraligned through a Rb room-temperature vapor cell, and the 1260-nm coupler beam is co- or counteraligned with the probe beam. Several cases of EIT and EIA, measured over a range of detunings of the 776-nm beam, are studied. The observed phenomena are modeled by numerically solving the Lindblad equation, and the results are interpreted in terms of the probe-beam absorption behavior of velocity- and detuning-dependent dressed states. Interaction-time effects are discussed. To explore the utility of three-photon Rydberg EIA and EIT for microwave electric-field diagnostics, a sub-THz field generated by a signal source and a frequency quadrupler is applied to the Rb cell. The 100.633-GHz field resonantly drives the $28{F}_{7/2}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}29{D}_{5/2}$ transition and causes Autler-Townes splittings in the Rydberg EIA and EIT spectra, which are measured and employed to characterize the performance of the microwave quadrupler.
