Concentration dependence of up-conversion quenching rate in Er-doped glass fiber

Н. В. Никоноров, Alexander K. Przhevuskii

For creation of planar and fiber amplifiers, the up-conversion processes in Er-doped glasses should be taken into account. We consider the up-conversion transition in a pair of Er/sup 3+/ions, when in initial state both the ions are at the /sup 4/I/sub 13/2/level, and in final state one ion is at the /sup 4/I/sub 15/2/ ground level and other at the /sup 4/I/sub 9/2/ level.

Investigating the Properties of Glasses Using High Resolution Spectroscopy of Er3+ Ions

Daisuke Hashimoto, Kaoru Shimizu

We have been investigating hyperfine sublevels of 67 Er 3+ ions doped in a silicate glass fiber with the objective of demonstrating quantum memory in the .5-µmtelecommunication band.Memory time is determined by the stability of hyperfine sublevels (the lifetime) of 67 Er 3+ ions, so it is therefore necessary to clarify the lifetime properties. This article describes (i) the anomalous temperature dependence of the lifetime that was unexpectedly discovered in the lifetime measurements and (ii) the physical properties of glass that resulted in the anomalous phenomenon.

Radiative lifetime of metastable Xe3+ measured using an electrostatic ion beam trap

M. Saito, Asahi Chikaoka, T. Majima +2 more

We have measured the radiative lifetime of the 2 P 3/2 metastable level in Xe 3+ using an electrostatic ion beam trap. The lifetime was obtained by measuring the number of photons emitted during the 2 P 3/2 → 2 D 3/2 transition of Xe 3+ as a function of the storage time. The lifetime is compared with previously reported theoretical and experimental values.

Metastable-state lifetime of erbium ions measured in the fiber propagation direction: Expansion of measurable fiber length

Mami Nakandakari, K. Kuroda, Yuzo Yoshikuni

Abstract We report the measurement of the metastable-state lifetime of erbium ions doped in a fiber. We apply the pump–probe technique with a wavelength-tunable laser array. This technique allows us to measure the lifetime through delayed absorption in the fiber propagation directions. By tuning the wavelength of the pump–probe pulse pairs to a low absorption wavelength, the lifetime of the metastable state is successfully measured in a 5-m-long fiber. The lifetime is determined to be 10.0 ms, which agrees well with previously reported values.

Evaluation of ^4I_15/2 and ^4I_13/2 Stark-level energies in erbium-doped aluminosilicate glass fibers

E. Desurvire, J. R. Simpson

Spectroscopic measurements of fluorescence and absorption in an erbium-doped fiber permit the evaluation of the Stark-level energies of the (4)I(15/2) and (4)I(13/2) manifolds in Er:glass. The data permit the allocation of the individual laser transitions associated with the room-temperature gain spectrum of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers operating near lambda = 1.53 microm.
