Ultra-Short Pulses With High Repetition Frequency in Transmission Plasmonic Systems

Shilei Li, Yanan Qi, Liming Li +2 more

Ultra-short pulses with high repetition frequency have great application prospects in the field of nano-optics. Here, in the case of continuous wave incidence, the femtosecond pulses with THz repetition frequency are achieved in the transmission system consisting of quantum emitters (QEs) and plasmonic resonators. The generation mechanism of the ultra-short pulses with high repetition frequency is elucidated by semi-classical model. Attribute to the presence of the two-level QEs, the field amplitude in plasmonic resonator is oscillating with time, resulting in the transmittance of the system behave as the form of pulse oscillation. Moreover, the pulse repetition frequency and extinction ratio can be freely controlled by the incident light intensity and QEs number density to obtain the required ultra-short pulses at nanoscale. This also has potential applications in high-speed signal processing fields and generating optical clock signals that can be used in optical computing.

Rare earth materials for population density control with ultra-high-speed optical pulses

D.C. Dai, Qi Luo, R.H. Li +4 more

The rare earth materials, KNdFe(CN)/sub 6/.3H/sub 2/O (KNFCN), NdFe(CN)/sub 6/.4H/sub 2/O (NFCN), and NdFeO/sub 3/ (NFO) are characterized by absorption and fluorescence spectra. The dephasing times (T/sub 2/) and the fluorescent lifetimes (T/sub 1/) of the materials are determined. The critical bit rate (W/sub crit/) for ultra-high-speed population density control is discussed. The feasibility of using the materials for ultra-high-speed, all-optical switching devices is presented.

Frequency-modulated few-cycle optical-pulse-train-induced controllable ultrafast coherent population oscillations in two-level atomic systems

Parvendra Kumar, Amarendra K. Sarma

We report a study on the ultrafast coherent population oscillations (UCPOs) in two-level atoms induced by a frequency-modulated few-cycle optical pulse train. The phenomenon of UCPOs is investigated by numerically solving the optical Bloch equations beyond the rotating wave approximation. We demonstrate that the quantum state of the atoms and the frequency of the UCPOs may be controlled by controlling the number of pulses in the pulse trains and the pulse repetition time, respectively. Moreover, the robustness of the population inversion against the variation of the laser pulse parameters is also investigated. The proposed scheme may be useful for the creation of atoms in selected quantum states for desired time duration and may have potential applications in ultrafast optical switching. The scheme may also be used to measure pulse repetition rate.
