Spatial optical memory based on coherent population oscillations

We show that a system characterized by long-lived coherent population oscillations (CPOs), such as a two-level system that decays via a shelving state, can be used to construct a spatial optical memory. In the presence of a cw control field, a field is generated at the four-wave mixing (FWM) frequency with the same spatial profile as the initial probe. When the control field is switched off, these spatial profiles are encoded in the CPOs of the ground and storage states. When the control field is switched on again, the probe and FWM fields are retrieved simultaneously with the same spatial profiles as the initial probe.

Frequency-modulated few-cycle optical-pulse-train-induced controllable ultrafast coherent population oscillations in two-level atomic systems

Parvendra Kumar, Amarendra K. Sarma

We report a study on the ultrafast coherent population oscillations (UCPOs) in two-level atoms induced by a frequency-modulated few-cycle optical pulse train. The phenomenon of UCPOs is investigated by numerically solving the optical Bloch equations beyond the rotating wave approximation. We demonstrate that the quantum state of the atoms and the frequency of the UCPOs may be controlled by controlling the number of pulses in the pulse trains and the pulse repetition time, respectively. Moreover, the robustness of the population inversion against the variation of the laser pulse parameters is also investigated. The proposed scheme may be useful for the creation of atoms in selected quantum states for desired time duration and may have potential applications in ultrafast optical switching. The scheme may also be used to measure pulse repetition rate.

Exciton Rabi oscillation: coherently manipulate zero-dimensional quantum states by light

Hidehiko Kamada, Hideki Gotoh, H. Ando

Summary form only given. Optical Rabi oscillations are the most essential physics that coherent optical control of the quantum states relies on. Observation of the exciton population flopping thus can be a first step to the coherent control. In this contribution, we report the Rabi oscillation of an isolated excitonic two-level system in a disk-shaped In/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As quantum dot. Control of population and phase of single-dot exciton is demonstrated.
