Abstract

We report a study on the ultrafast coherent population oscillations (UCPOs) in two-level atoms induced by a frequency-modulated few-cycle optical pulse train. The phenomenon of UCPOs is investigated by numerically solving the optical Bloch equations beyond the rotating wave approximation. We demonstrate that the quantum state of the atoms and the frequency of the UCPOs may be controlled by controlling the number of pulses in the pulse trains and the pulse repetition time, respectively. Moreover, the robustness of the population inversion against the variation of the laser pulse parameters is also investigated. The proposed scheme may be useful for the creation of atoms in selected quantum states for desired time duration and may have potential applications in ultrafast optical switching. The scheme may also be used to measure pulse repetition rate.

Coherent Population Trapping of a Three-level Atom Interacting with Few Cycle Pulse Train

蔡勋明 CAI Xun-minga, 范梦慧 FAN Meng-huib

The poulation transfer and coherent population trapping of a three-level atom interacting with few cycle pulse train are studied. The density matrix equation in interation picture is numerical solved without rotating wave approximation. The research indicates that if a three-level atom interacts with a few cycle pulse train, the population transfer of level and the coherence of ground state will be gradual accumulated. When the repetition frequency of pulses is integer points of the ground-state splitting, the three atom interacts with pulse train can be seen as the atom interacts with two tenoning frequency of the frequency comb.So the system will be in the dark state and reach coherent population trapping. If the parameters of few-cycle pulse are appropriately selected, the coherence of three-level system will evolute into stable value in 0.5 nanosecond. The coherent population trapping in the three-level is generated.Comparing with the pulse that the pulse width is 100 femtoseconds, the build-up time of coherent population trapping by few cycle pulse train is shortened two orders of magnitude. When the ground-state splitting is wided enough and the carrier frequency of pulse is ω=(ω1+ω2)/2,where,are the atomic transition frequency, the doppler frequency shift that is aroused by the movement of atom won't destroy the coherent population trapping of atom. The reason is that all tenoning frequencies of the frequency comb have the same frequency shift,so the condition of coherent population trapping is still meeted.

Response of a two-level atom to a frequency-modulated optically coherent pulse train

James M. Supplee, Edward A. Whittaker, Keith Andrew

We present an analytical expression for the response of a two-level atom to a frequency-modulated optically coherent pulse train. The optical beam has sinusoidal frequency modulation and is chopped to have a square-wave envelope. We assume that the laser pulses are short compared with the atomic-decay time, the pulse-repetition time, and the modulation period. With this short-pulse assumption we are able to use a method similar to Temkin’s [J. Opt. Soc. Am. B10, 830–839 (1993)] and solve the optical Bloch equations in closed form.

Ultrafast and efficient coherence creation in Λ-like atomic systems driven by nonlinearly chirped few-cycle pulses

Amarendra K. Sarma, Parvendra Kumar

We report an ultrafast and efficient way to create the maximum coherence between the two lower states in a -like atomic systems, driven by two nonlinearly chirped few-cycle pulses. The phenomenon of coherent population trapping and electromagnetically induced population transfer are investigated by solving the appropriate density matrix equations without invoking the rotating wave approximation. The robustness of the scheme for maximum coherence against the variation of the laser parameters are tested numerically. We also demonstrate that the proposed scheme could be used to obtain complete population transfer to an initially empty ground state.

Ultrafast coherent population transfer in two- and three-level quantum systems using sub-cycle and single-cycle pulses

Xunming Cai, Jingyun Zhao, Zhaoying Wang +1 more

The interactions of sub-cycle and single-cycle pulses with two- or three-level quantum systems are studied, respectively. For the two-level quantum system, two cases in which the carrier frequency of pulses is in resonance and far from resonance with the atom are analysed. The ultrafast complete population transfer can be obtained. The sub-cycle pulse with a far off-resonant carrier frequency is found to be more suitable for the population transfer. The relation between the area of pulses and population transfer is clarified in the sub-cycle and single-cycle domain. For the Lambda-type three-level quantum system, more than 90% of population transfer can be achieved from one level to another. The scheme is insensitive to the variation of the laser parameters such as the peak Rabi frequency and the carrier frequency for both two- and three-level quantum systems.

Coherent Control of the Polarization of Ultrashort Optical Pulses Using Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Masahiro Takeoka, Daisuke Fujishima, Fumihiko Kannari

We propose a scheme of all-optical polarization switching in a four-level atomic system. In this scheme, the polarization state of an optical pulse is controlled by an another control pulse via a four-wave mixing (FWM) process between orthogonal components of a pulse. Using a sufficiently strong control pulse, a linear absorption loss during FWM is significantly suppressed, therefore the polarization can be controlled with high transmission efficiency. Since our scheme requires only one ground (stable) state, it is applicable to the excitonic systems of semiconductor quantum wells. Our numerical calculation, based on typical parameters of Pb-based inorganic-organic-layered perovskite-type materials, shows that, using ultrashort-pulse trains, polarization switching with a high repetition rate of more than 10 GHz is possible.

Population density gratings induced by few-cycle optical pulses in a resonant medium

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, A. V. Pakhomov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov +4 more

Creation, erasing and ultrafast control of population density gratings using few-cycle optical pulses coherently interacting with resonant medium is discussed. In contrast to the commonly used schemes, here the pulses do not need to overlap in the medium, interaction between the pulses is mediated by excitation of polarization waves. We investigate the details of the dynamics arising in such ultrashort pulse scheme and develop an analytical theory demonstrating the importance of the phase memory effects in the dynamics.
