Manipulating the focal shift in a medium with electromagnetically induced transparency

Abstract

By approximating the index distribution of a medium with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) as a gradient index (GRIN), propagation laws in the medium with EIT can be obtained. Transmission properties in an optical system with an EIT medium are analyzed. The results show that, unlike the case in the ordinary GRIN medium, the refractive index of EIT medium has the better controllability. Consequently, discussions are focused on how to conveniently manipulate the focal shift of the input in the EIT by means of controlling the index of the medium. Additionally, the speckle radius on the location of the actual focus can be diminished by adjusting some parameters in the EIT medium.

Controlling Brewster angle via manipulation of refractive index of electromagnetically induced transparency vapor

Fei Zhuang

A new application of coherent manipulation of EIT(electromagnetically induced transparency) medium is suggested, that is controlling the Brewster angle via manipulation of refractive index of electromagnetically induced transparency vapor. The EIT atomic vapor are filled on the background of two pieces glass whose refractive index is 1.5.By manipulating the refractive index of the EIT vapor via the external control field, one can obtain the controllable Brewster angle that is sensitive to the variations of external conditions(e.g.the intensity of the control field). It is shown that Controlling the Brewster angle can be achieved by choosing the specific parameters such as the Rabi frequency of control light.

Electromagnetically induced self-imaging

Jing Cheng, 韩申生

We study the self-imaging and image-transforming properties of a probe field in a cold atomic medium with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Due to the similarities between the gradient-index medium and the inhomogeneous index distribution of an EIT medium under the conditions of a negative probe detuning and a Gaussian control field, we find based on analytical investigations that there exists a kind of electromagnetically induced self-imaging phenomenon in cold atomic media. Numerical simulations clearly show that electromagnetically induced self-imaging is observable and controllable. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

EFFECTS OF MODULATION SCHEMES ON OPTICAL PULSES TRANSITING AN ELECTROMAGNETICALLY INDUCED TRANSPARENT MEDIUM

Wachter, Christian F.

This thesis investigates the result of modulation schemes in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in rubidium vapor. Through the process of EIT, a control beam can be used to change the optical properties of a medium experienced by a probe field, generating a transparency window. The corresponding change in index of refraction results in slowed group velocity while the beam propagates through the medium. Modulation is used to transmit a message signal through a medium. In classical systems, this entails converting data into a radio frequency by adding a message to an electronic or optical carrier signal. The properties of EIT, light-slowing, and their impacts on a probe pulse with modulation will be confirmed through a detailed semi-classical analysis and by experimental observation.

Optical control of light propagation in photonic crystal based on electromagnetically induced transparency

Dan Wang, Jinze Wu, Junxiang Zhang

A kind of photonic crystal structure with modulation of the refractive index is investigated both experimentally and theoretically for exploiting electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The combination of EIT with periodically modulated refractive index medium gives rise to high efficiency reflection as well as forbidden transmission in a three-level atomic system coupled by standing wave. We show an accurate theoretical simulation via transfer-matrix theory, automatically accounting for multilayer reflections, thus fully demonstrate the existence of photonic crystal structure in atomic vapor.

Electromagnetically induced narrow linewidths of optical resonators

Matthias A. Müller, G. Muller, Andreas Wicht +2 more

Summary form only given. We present our work on the modified properties of an optical resonator that contains an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium. Transparency and steep index of refraction are utilized to reduce the linewidth of the cavity. The influence of the relative intensities of the laser fields is studied, and the results are in good agreement with computer simulations. The linewidth of an optical cavity depends on the phase shift accumulated by the light wave during one round trip. A transparent medium with very strong dispersion causes a very rapidly varying phase shift and would have a remarkable effect on the linewidth of the cavity.
