Abstract

A new application of coherent manipulation of EIT(electromagnetically induced transparency) medium is suggested, that is controlling the Brewster angle via manipulation of refractive index of electromagnetically induced transparency vapor. The EIT atomic vapor are filled on the background of two pieces glass whose refractive index is 1.5.By manipulating the refractive index of the EIT vapor via the external control field, one can obtain the controllable Brewster angle that is sensitive to the variations of external conditions(e.g.the intensity of the control field). It is shown that Controlling the Brewster angle can be achieved by choosing the specific parameters such as the Rabi frequency of control light.

Controlling the photonic bandgap structures via manipulation of refractive index of electromagnetically induced transparency vapor

A new application of coherent manipulation of EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) medium is suggested. A two-dimensional photonic cystal with a triangle lattice of elliptic air cylinders, which are filled with the EIT atomic vapor, in the KAs backgroud material is designed. By manipulating the refractive index of the EIT vapor via the external control field, one can obtain the controllable bandgap structure that is sensitive to the variations of external conditions (e.g. the intensity of the control field). It is shown that a large complete bandgap of about 0.0503ωe in the region of high normalized frequency could be achieved by choosing the specific parameters such as the spontaneous decay rate, dephasing rate, Rabi frequency of control light, atomic number density as well as elliptic geometric parameters.

Manipulating the focal shift in a medium with electromagnetically induced transparency

Chunfang Wang, Jing Cheng, Shensheng Han

By approximating the index distribution of a medium with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) as a gradient index (GRIN), propagation laws in the medium with EIT can be obtained. Transmission properties in an optical system with an EIT medium are analyzed. The results show that, unlike the case in the ordinary GRIN medium, the refractive index of EIT medium has the better controllability. Consequently, discussions are focused on how to conveniently manipulate the focal shift of the input in the EIT by means of controlling the index of the medium. Additionally, the speckle radius on the location of the actual focus can be diminished by adjusting some parameters in the EIT medium.

Probe frequency- and field intensity-sensitive coherent control effects in an EIT-based periodic layered medium

Teh‐Chau Liau, Jin‐Jei Wu, Jianqi Shen Jianqi Shen +1 more

A periodic layered medium, with unit cells consisting of a dielectric and an electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT)-based atomic vapor, is designed for light propagation manipulation.Considering that a destructive quantum interference relevant to a two-photon resonance emerges in EIT-based atoms interacting with both control and probe fields, an EIT-based periodic layered medium exhibits a flexible frequency-sensitive optical response, where a very small variation in the probe frequency can lead to a drastic variation in reflectance and transmittance. The present EIT-based periodic layered structure can result in controllable optical processes that depend sensitively on the external control field. The tunable and sensitive optical response induced by the quantum interference of a multi-level atomic system can be applied in the fabrication of new photonic and quantum optical devices. This material will also open a good perspective for the application of such designs in several new fields, including photonic microcircuits or integrated optical circuits.

Frequency-Sensitive Optical Response via Tunable Band Structure in an EIT-Based Layered Medium

Teh Chau Liau, Jin‐Jei Wu, Jian Qi Shen +1 more

The optical response of an atomic vapor can be controlled by using tunable quantum interference induced by external control field. A periodic layered medium whose unit cells consist of dielectric (e.g., GaAs) and EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) atomic vapor is suggested. It is demonstrated that such an EIT-based periodic layered medium shows more flexible optical response (sensitive to frequency) than a conventional photonic crystal does. The controllable band structure that depends on the external control field can be applicable to designs of new devices such as photonic switches and photonic logic gates, where one laser field can be controlled by the other one, and would have potential applications in the field of integrated optical circuits and other related areas, e.g., the all-optical technique.

Optical control of light propagation in photonic crystal based on electromagnetically induced transparency

Dan Wang, Jinze Wu, Junxiang Zhang

A kind of photonic crystal structure with modulation of the refractive index is investigated both experimentally and theoretically for exploiting electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The combination of EIT with periodically modulated refractive index medium gives rise to high efficiency reflection as well as forbidden transmission in a three-level atomic system coupled by standing wave. We show an accurate theoretical simulation via transfer-matrix theory, automatically accounting for multilayer reflections, thus fully demonstrate the existence of photonic crystal structure in atomic vapor.
