Abstract

We report a three-photon resonant six-wave mixing (SWM) with phase- conjugation geometry. It has advantages that phase matching condition is not critical and the generation of SWM signal is efficient. This technique provides a new spectroscopic tool for studying the highly excited atomic or molecular states with high resolution. The feasibility of this technique is demonstrated in sodium vapour.

Doppler-free three-photon resonant six-wave mixing

Zuo Zhan-Chun, Sun Jiang, Ling-An Wu +2 more

We study the three-photon resonant six-wave mixing (SWM) with phase-conjugation geometry in Doppler system. The theoretical calculation indicates that the signal spectrum is Doppler-free when the laser line width is narrow. This technique provides a new spectroscopic tool for studying the highly excited atomic or molecular states with high resolution. It has advantages of uncritical phase matching condition, excellent spatial signal resolution and simple optical alignment.

Generalized n -Photon Resonant 2n -Wave Mixing in an ( n+1 )-Level System with Phase-Conjugate Geometry

Zhanchun Zuo, Sun Jiang, Xia Liu +4 more

A generalized scheme for phase-conjugate resonant 2n-wave mixing, which has a high efficiency and is easy for phase matching, is proposed. As a new type of coherent laser spectroscopy this approach can be employed for studying highly excited atomic states or states with a high angular momentum. To demonstrate its feasibility we have studied the doubly excited autoionizing Rydberg states of Ba by phase-conjugate six-wave mixing, and have furthermore achieved eight-wave mixing in Na. This method may find wide application in related areas such as coherent transient spectroscopy, Autler-Townes spectroscopy and electromagnetically induced transparency. In particular, it may provide new insights into the nature of highly excited states.

Three-Photon Resonant Nondegenerate Six-Wave Mixing in a Dressed Atomic System

Sun Jiang, Guangsheng Fu, Su Hong-Xin +3 more

We report a three-photon resonant nondegenerate six-wave mixing (NSWM) in a dressed cascade five-level system. It has advantages that phase match condition is not stringent and NSWM signal is enhanced tremendously due to the multiple resonance with the atomic transition frequencies. In the presence of a strong coupling Held, the three-photon resonant NSWM spectrum exhibits Autler-Townes splitting. This technique provides a spectroscopic tool for measuring not only the resonant frequency and dephasing rate but also the transition dipole moment between two highly excited atomic states.

Coherent Excitation and Control of S State Rydberg Six-wave Mixing

Junling Che, Yanpeng Zhang

In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a novel nondestructive optical detection method by coherently exciting and controlling the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-assisted six-wave mixing (SWM) process of S state Rydberg atoms in 85Rb vapour. By analysing the evolution regularity of the resonant SWM signals under various conditions, one can control the signal by altering the atom density and detuning and the strengths of the probe and coupling fields. The characteristics of this SWM process provide a potential application for spectroscopy physics and determining the interactions between optical fields and atoms.

Spatial interference between four- and six-wave mixing signals

Blake Anderson, Yanpeng Zhang, Utsab Khadka +1 more

We experimentally demonstrate spatial interference between simultaneously generated four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) signals in a multilevel atomic system. By tuning the relative phase between the FWM and SWM processes the relative strengths between these two high-order nonlinear optical processes can be investigated.
