Abstract

In optical applications including hybrid and integrated cases, there are some inherent phenomena such as dispersion, loss and many others that must be critically removed for performance improvement. Among these dispersion is important for light propagation and speed of transmission. Optical pulse broadening and chirping are main disadvantages of dispersion in pulse propagation. Dispersion cancellation in these applications is crucial. Dispersion compensators are widely used which are realized with different methods. In this paper a novel dispersion compensator and management system based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is introduced. For realization of EIT phenomenon in this paper four level atoms or quantum dots is used. In this analysis uniform distribution of these atoms is assumed. With application of control fields the absorption and the index of refraction are controlled. So, with intensity of a control light the dispersion factor is manipulated. For implementation of this idea ring resonator is considered. With application of control signal the group delay, phase difference and dispersion are controlled. Easy integration of the proposed technique is an important advantage of this method. Also, intensity of the control signal is main parameter for dispersion tuning. The proposed technique is all-optical dispersion management system. Our calculations show delay time and dispersion value well over nsec and 20 ps/km.nm respectively.

All-optical filter design: Electromagnetically induced transparency and ring resonator

Ali Rostami, Karim Abbasian

In this paper, we present a novel method based on Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) and ring resonator for description of all-optical controllable filters that is so necessary for development of all-optical networks and systems. Impurities including 4-level atoms or nanocrystals added to ring resonator for control of the absorption and the index of refraction. Parameters of the control electromagnetic field or fields are used to manipulate the absorption and the index of refraction of the ring resonator. Also, optical filtering behavior of the ring resonator is studied. It is shown that using the control field, optical filtering properties of the proposed structure can be controlled.

Observation of EIT like spectrum in the nested fiber ring resonator

Yundong Zhang, Changqiu Yu, Kaiyang Wang +1 more

We demonstrate the electromagnetically induced transparency like spectrum in the nested fiber ring resonator with the transfer matrix theory; the system consists of two rings and two waveguides which are connected by four couplers. The simulation results show that the tunable group delay can be realized by changing the coupling coefficients. At transmission window, the transmittance can achieve approximately 97.2% with the 0.05ns group delay. Through tuning the coupling coefficients, the group delay can vary from 0.05ns to -21.23ns and the bandwidth of the transparency window can vary from 37MHz to 15MHz.The ability for realizing such transparency resonance and for controlling the group delay or the bandwidth of such resonance is important for applications such as optical switching, as well as tunable bandwidth filter applications.

Tunable electromagnetically induced transparency in integrated silicon photonics circuit

Ang Li, Wim Bogaerts

We comprehensively simulate and experimentally demonstrate a novel approach to generate tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a fully integrated silicon photonics circuit. It can also generate tunable fast and slow light. The circuit is a single ring resonator with two integrated tunable reflectors inside, which form an embedded Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity inside the ring cavity. The mode of the FP cavity can be controlled by tuning the reflections using integrated thermo-optic tuners. Under correct tuning conditions, the interaction of the FP mode and the ring resonance mode will generate a Fano resonance and an EIT response. The extinction ratio and bandwidth of the EIT can be tuned by controlling the reflectors. Measured group delay proves that both fast light and slow light can be generated under different tuning conditions. A maximum group delay of 1100 ps is observed because of EIT. Pulse advance around 1200 ps is also demonstrated.

ALL-OPTICAL TUNABLE MIRROR DESIGN USING ELECTROMAGNETICALLY INDUCED TRANSPARENCY

Karim Abbasian, Ali Rostami, Zia Daei Koozehkanani

A new and efficient proposal for all-optical tunable devices and systems using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is proposed. For this purpose a slab doped with quantum dots for realization of three-level atomic system is considered. Density matrix formulation for evaluation of the proposed structure is used. The reflection and transmission coefficients of the considered slab are calculated and the related amplitude and phase quantities studied versus parameters of the structure. We show that some nanometer tuning with application of the control field is obtained. So, the proposed idea can open a new realization method of all-optical tunable devices and systems towards all-optical systems.

Refraction enhancement in plasmonics by coherent control of plasmon resonances

Ali Panahpour, Abolfazl Mahmoodpoor, Andrei V. Lavrinenko

Optical materials exhibit significant losses over the resonance frequency of their constituent atoms and so they are practically implemented at frequencies far from resonances. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) provides a method for effective suppression of optical loss in a narrow window over the resonance, where the medium exhibits significant dispersion but at the expense of zero susceptibility. The classical or plasmonic analogs of the EIT effect are introduced and widely used in the context of electromagnetic or optical metamaterials (MMs). In another interesting phenomenon in quantum optics known as enhancement of index of refraction (EIR), the optical loss of the medium can be zero or even negative at the region of maximal susceptibility and negligible dispersion. This condition is interesting for applications where a strong electromagnetic response of the medium with negligible loss is required, such as zero- or negative-index metamaterials (MMs). Here we introduce a plasmonic analog of the EIR which allows for coherent control over the polarizability and absorption of plasmonic nanoantennas. It can open up the way for loss-compensated propagation of optical waves in zero-index to high-refractive-index plasmonic MMs. The scheme also offers an approach to all-optical switching and coherent control of transmission, diffraction, and polarization conversion properties of plasmonic nanostructures, as well as propagation properties of surface plasmon polaritons on metasurfaces.

Coherent control of optical bistability in Rydberg electromagnetically-induced transparency atomic system

You-Lin Chuang, Mehmet Emre Taşgın

We study optical bistable behavior of a Rydberg electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) atomic medium in a unidirectional optical ring-cavity. Due to strong van del Waal (vdW) interactions between the atoms, both optical nonlinear dispersion and nonlinear absorption coefficients are enhanced substantially. Under the condition of two-photon on resonance, we show that probe one-photon detuning can change the phase of the third order nonlinearity coefficient, which tunes the character of the optical bistability within different ratios of dispersive and absorptive types. This enables the single-photon control over photonic devices for further manipulation of light other than switches and transistors. More interestingly, we predict appearance of a scaling phenomena for optical bistabilities with the factors of coupling Rabi frequency and atomic density. Additionally, we also discuss the influence of the cavity detuning and the mirror transmission coefficient on the optical bistable behavior. The strong bistable feature provides a good ingredient for realizing all-optical logic gate devices in optical computing.
