Abstract

Stable and unstable states of a nonlinear silicon interferometer under external dc bias are investigated using Nd:YAG laser light excitation. Experimental results as well as calculations from a theoretical model reveal bi- and multistability and self-pulsing properties.

Color multistability in Fabry-Perot interferometer

Агишев Игорь Николаевич, S. M. Karpuck, Alexander S. Rubanov +2 more

A scheme for the realization of optical bistability in a nonlinear Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer has been considered under conditions of multifrequency excitation. The dependencies of the spectral-components intensities, their ratios, and the total intensity at F-P output on the input intensity have been analyzed. The possibility to realize the optical control of radiation color as perceived by the eye has been shown.

Self-pulsing and transients of a Fabry–Perot interferometer with quadratic nonlinear medium

B. Wedding, Armin Gasch, D. Jäger

The dynamic properties of a Fabry–Perot interferometer filled with a material exhibiting second-order dispersive nonlinearity are studied both theoretically and experimentally. The response of the medium is described by an intensity dependent phase constant as derived from self-action effects. Considering two relaxation times, that of the material and that of the cavity, the basic relations for the stability analysis and for the numerical calculations are obtained. Bistability and self-pulsing effects are predicted. Moreover, the transient behavior is characterized by anomalous switching properties like overshoot and alternate switching. The corresponding experiments performed on a nonlinear transmission line resonator confirm the theoretical results. In a final discussion, the relations to the field of nonlinear optics are outlined.

Symmetry breaking and dynamics of four-wave mixing in the nonlinear interferometer

O. G. Romanov, Alexei L. Tolstik

We consider the dynamics of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer symmetrically pumped by two light beam. An analysis of the conditions for realization of symmetric and asymmetric modes of optical bi- and multistability has been performed using a theory of degenerate four-wave mixing adapted to a Fabry-Perot resonator with amplitude-phase nonlinearity. Complexity of the dynamic behavior due to symmetry breaking bifurcations has been investigated both theoretically and numerically.

Low-power optical bistability and multistability in a self-electro-optic silicon interferometer

D. Jäger, Franz Forsmann, B. Wedding

A novel hybrid semiconductor device is presented which shows optical bistability and a clear optical multistability at milliwatt input powers. Experimentally, a silicon etalon is used as a Fabry-Perot interferometer where an electric field is additionally applied by using integrated electrical contacts. At 1.06 μm the device exhibits the combined properties of a photodetector and an optical modulator. Due to this self-electro-optic effect a large optical nonlinearity is achieved which is theoretically attributed to electrical and optical heating of the sample.

Optical Bistability from Ferroelectric Fabry-Perot Interferometer

Abdel-Baset M.A. Ibrahim, David Reginald Tilley, Junaidah Osman

We study the nonlinear optical bistability and multistability of a nonlinear ferroelectric (FE) Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer assumed coated with partial dielectric mirrors on its interfaces. The FE material is considered to have an intensity-dependent refractive index where the third order nonlinear susceptibility χ ilmn (3) acts like Kerr coefficient. The nonlinear response of the FE medium is modeled by the Landau-Khalatnikov (LK) dynamical equation. Within a single frequency approximation, the nonlinear wave equation is written in terms of polarization P rather than the electric field E as the dependent variable. The resulting nonlinear polarization equation is numerically integrated across the FP film using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. The behavior of the resulting polarization and transmission as a function of the field input intensity is investigated.
