Abstract

A theory of formation of Stokes field (Raman) polaritons, which arise due to the coherent stimulated Raman scattering of light in an ensemble of three-level atoms placed in a Fabry-Perot cavity in the case of a strong coupling regime, is developed. The dispersion and absorption properties of Raman polaritons are investigated and the conditions for polariton amplification are found. It is shown that for certain pump power values, nonclassical correlations (entanglement) between light and dark polaritons are observed in the system.

Dynamic amplification and generation of entangled polaritons in doped media

Alexei V. Prokhorov, Igor O. Barinov, Sergei M Arakelyan

We have developed a theory that describes the formation of probe-field polaritons under the conditions of strong coupling in the Raman Λ-scheme interaction in a Y 2 SiO 5 crystal doped with 59 Pr atoms. The threshold optical pump power for efficient amplification of the probe-field polaritons in a medium consisting of three-level atoms is determined. The onset of strong nonclassical correlations (entanglement) between the light- and dark-state polaritons at the near-threshold pump power is established.

Generation of entangled polaritons in doped media

Igor O. Barinov, Alexei V. Prokhorov, Sergei M Arakelyan

We developed a semiclassical theory of polariton excitations for the Λ-scheme of interaction realized in an yttrium orthosilicate crystal doped with Pr 59 atoms. The threshold optical pump power for efficient amplification of the probefield polaritons in a medium consisting of three-level atoms is determined. At the near-threshold conditions in the system the appearance of strong non-classical correlations (entanglement) between light and dark polaritons, similar to generation of biphotons in optics is predicted.

The nonlinear theory of formation of entangled polaritons of probe field in the case of Raman interaction scheme in Y2SiO5 crystal doped by 59Pr atoms is developed. The model of polariton waveguide with doped medium inside based on Fabry-Prot interferometer is suggested. The opportunity of dynamic amplification of entangled polaritons in such a system is shown.

Coherent propagation of Stokes light in a collisionally broadened three-level amplifier

Bruce J. Herman, Joseph H. Eberly, Michael G. Raymer

We undertake a theoretical investigation of the coherent optical propagation of Stokes light in a collisionally broadened three-level Raman amplifier. The Stokes light consists of two distinct spectral components: off-resonance stimulated Raman scattering and on-resonance stimulated fluorescence, induced by collisional transfer of population to a near-resonant intermediate state of the atomic system. Our model is based on the semiclassical Maxwell-Bloch formalism where the separation of the Stokes light into two components results in an expansion from the usual 9 to 13 atomic variables. We investigate the model both analytically and numerically. We point out the physical contributions to the simultaneous evolution of pump, fluorescence, and Raman light. We discuss the development during propagation of these separate pulses, emphasizing the nonlinear effects that lead to saturation.

Quantum theory of spatial and temporal coherence properties of stimulated Raman scattering

Michael G. Raymer, Ian A. Walmsley, Jan Mostowski +1 more

A quantum theory of stimulated Raman scattering is presented that takes into account three-dimensional propagation and collisional dephasing, allowing the study of the spatial and temporal coherence properties of the generated Stokes light. Maxwell-Bloch equations for the Stokes field operator and the collective atomic operators are solved analytically under low-signal-gain conditions, where the laser field and the atomic ground states remain undepleted. The intensity and the space-time autocorrelation function of the Stokes field are calculated. The Stokes field is expanded into a set of statistically independent ``coherence modes,'' which are determined explicitly for the case of a cylindrically shaped pumped volume. The Stokes pulse energy W is found to fluctuate from pulse to pulse. The probability distribution function for pulse energies P(W) is calculated for a range of Fresnel numbers of the excited volume and collisional dephasing rates. For small values of Fresnel number and dephasing rate, P(W) is a negative exponential distribution. For large values of either, P(W) narrows and approaches a Gaussian-shaped distribution. This occurs because many independent modes contribute to the Stokes emission, making it spatially and/or temporally incoherent.

Stimulated collision-induced resonance Raman scattering

V.M. Arutunyan, N. Sh. Badanyan, N. V. Shakhnazaryan

The passage of strong monochromatic laser radiation through a resonance medium consisting of three-level atoms is investigated. It is shown that if collisions are taken into account in the scattered waves the resonances at combination frequencies occur to first order in the laser field intensity. A numerical analysis of the dependence of the stimulated electronic Raman scattering (SERS) components' gain factors on the pump frequency is carried out. The dispersion curves of the SERS components' gain (absorption) factors for fixed values of pump frequency and intensity are plotted.
