Abstract

We propose a scheme that provides large controllable delays for broadband optical pulses. The system is based on the steep dispersion of a coherently driven medium, in which the narrow electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) band is overcome by using spatial and temporal processing.

All optically controlled steering of light

Qingqing Sun, Yuri V. Rostovtsev, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

We propose a scheme that provides all optically controlled steering of light beam. The system is based on steep dispersion of coherently driven medium. Using eikonal equation, we study the steering angle, the spread of optical beam, and the limits set by residual absorption of medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Implementation of another scheme for ultra-short pulses is also discussed.

Optical beam steering based on electromagnetically induced transparency

We propose a scheme that provides all-optically-controlled steering of light beam. The system is based on steep dispersion of a coherently driven medium. Using the eikonal equation, we study the steering angle, the spread of the optical beam, and the limits set by residual absorption of the medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. Implementation of another scheme for ultrashort pulses is also discussed.

Increase of the fractional delay of the pulse in an electromagnetically-induced-transparency medium

R. N. Shakhmuratov, J. Odeurs

We propose a nonadiabatic change of the control-field amplitude to restore the temporal shape of a signal pulse, which usually experiences an appreciable temporal broadening in a conventional regime of electromagnetically-induced-transparency. This broadening sets a major limit on the maximum time delay achievable in a slow-light medium. A circumvention of this limit may be useful for the application of a slow-light medium as a practical, controllable delay line.

Optimized pulse shaping in electromagnetically induced transparency slow light medium

Wenzhuo Tang, Bin Luo, Hong Mei Guo

Time delay and broadening of six isolated pulses are studied and experimentally demonstrated in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) slow light medium. The optimal pulse for largest delay (smallest broadening) is amplitude-shaped by Single-Exponential (Cosine).

Optical delay control of large-spectral-bandwidth laser pulses

Emilio Ignesti, Stefano Cavalieri, Lorenzo Fini +4 more

In this Rapid Communication we report an experimental observation of temporal delay control of large-spectral-bandwidth multimode laser pulses by means of electromagnetically induced transparency. We achieved optically controllable retardation of laser pulses with an input spectral bandwidth of 3.3 GHz with limited temporal distortion and excellent values of the delay-bandwidth product. The experimental results compare favorably with a theoretical analysis.
