Abstract

We propose a scheme that provides all-optically-controlled steering of light beam. The system is based on steep dispersion of a coherently driven medium. Using the eikonal equation, we study the steering angle, the spread of the optical beam, and the limits set by residual absorption of the medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. Implementation of another scheme for ultrashort pulses is also discussed.

We propose a scheme that provides large controllable delays for broadband optical pulses. The system is based on the steep dispersion of a coherently driven medium, in which the narrow electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) band is overcome by using spatial and temporal processing.

Two-way transparency in the light-matter interaction: Optical precursors with electromagnetically induced transparency

Heejeong Jeong, Shengwang Du

We theoretically study classical step-modulated pulse propagation in an optically thick medium with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) using a fast Fourier transform and a proposed hybrid-asymptotic analysis. The 100% transmitted leading edge traveling at $c$ consists of Sommerfeld-Brillouin precursors. The main signal, falling inside of the narrow EIT window, experiences a steep dispersion and slow group velocity. We suggest active control of the precursors and main signal separately by adjusting the parameters of the medium and incident pulse.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Stephen E. Harris

Electromagnetically induced transparency is a technique for eliminating the effect of a medium on a propagating beam of electromagnetic radiation. EIT may also be used, but under more limited conditions, to eliminate optical self-focusing and defocusing and to improve the transmission of laser beams through inhomogeneous refracting gases and metal vapors, as figure 1 illustrates. The technique may be used to create large populations of coherently driven uniformly phased atoms, thereby making possible new types of optoelectronic devices.

Controlling a group velocity of light by magnetic field

Yu. M. Golubev, T. Yu. Golubeva, Yuri V. Rostovtsev +1 more

We have shown that quantum interference in a driven quasi-degenerate two-level atomic system can be controlled by an externally applied magnetic field. We demonstrate that the mechanism of optical control is based on quantum interference, which allows one to implement both electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption in one atomic system. Dispersion of such the medium allows one to control group velocity of propagation of light pulses be ultra-slow or superluminal via applied magnetic field.

Guiding light by the modulated electromagnetically induced transparency

Yihong Qi, Gongwei Lin, Jie Yang +2 more

We propose a scheme for guiding light by the modulated electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a three-level atomic system. By using a periodically modulated control field, the linear and nonlinear susceptibilities are changed cyclically for the probe field, which results in the deflection of propagation direction of the probe beam. Propagation direction/path and output position of the probe soliton in the modulated EIT medium can be controlled precisely via adjusting the modulation period of the control field. By changing its initial amplitude, the probe beam can also be guided to a desired output position in the atomic system, driven by a periodic control field. These properties offer a novel way of soliton control, based on the modulated EIT effect.
