Abstract

Abstract Optical bistability is observed in a PbSnTe etalon at room temperature by two‐photon exitation with tunable TEA CO2 laser. The experimental results are compared with a numerical model which also takes into account the heating of the sample.

Guided-wave controlled etalons

Abstract Optical bistability in a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon can be controlled by several optical beams injected through the edges of the etalon. The control beams, which propagate transversely in the etalon, modify the refractive index, which in turn switches the etalon between its two stable states. The theory of operation of the device is presented, possible logical operations are discussed and experimental results from using an InSb etalon and a CO laser are reported.

Two photon induced optical bistability in CdHgTe at room temperature

D. Craig, Ajoy Kumar Kar, Jinesh Mathew +1 more

We report the first observation of quasi-steady state optical bistability in a 360 μm thick, uncoated Cd0.23Hg0.77Te etalon at room temperature as a result of the generation of free carriers through two photon absorption of pulsed 10.6 μm radiation from a hybrid TEA CO2laser (FWHM = 1.75 μs). The experimental results are compared with the predictions of a computer model.

Quasi-CW optical bistability in InSb at room temperature

Wei Ji, Ajoy Kumar Kar, Jinesh Mathew +1 more

We report the first observation of quasi-steady-state optical bistability in an InSb etalon at room temperature as a result of the generation of free carriers through two photon absorption of 10 μm radiation. Nonlinear tuning of the etalon through two free spectral ranges has been achieved, with bistability observed around the two cavity resonances. Switching from a low to high transmission state has been achieved in times less than 10 ns while switching in the opposite direction occurs within 50-100 ns. The experimental results have been successfully fitted to a numerical model of the device.

Thermally stable optical bistability in an InGaAs/InGaAlAs etalon at 1.5 μm wavelength

David T. Neilson, Jeffrey E. Ehrlich, Andy C. Walker +4 more

The Letter reports the first demonstration of thermally stable, optical bistability in a passive InGaAs/InGaAlAs multiquantum well nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon at the wavelength 1.5 μm. Critical switch powers of 1 mW were obtained, permitting operation with a CW diode laser source. Switch on/off times of 14 ns/40 ns were observed under slow ramping conditions.

Recent advances in optical testability

Nasser N. Peyghambarian

Optical bistability can be obtained in nonlinear materials either with Fabry-Perot mirrors or without external feedback. When a material is placed between partially reflecting mirrors, a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon is formed with the etalon providing an external feedback. Optical bistability and gating occur as a result of a shift in the Fabry-Perot peak when the light intensity is increased (or when a second laser beam is introduced into the cavity). Optical bistability with the external feedback mechanism has been observed in many semiconductors such as bulk GaAs, GaAs-AIGaAs multiple-quantum-well (MQW) structures, InSb, InAs, CdS, CdHgTe, GaSe, and CuCI.
